How Many Dresses did you try on?

MrsStanleyToBe, 8 March, 2017 at 15:02 Posted on Planning 0 19

Hey Hitchers

I'm having a major panic!? my usual clothes shopping happens on line, on the rare occasion I challenge the shops, I like to be in and out no messing ... I hate getting all hot and bothered trying things on!

I'm going to start dress shopping in about 6 months after I've lost a few Stone (fingers crossed) so I've started looking online and have decided I like Stella York's designs and there's a couple of places local to me that sell her dresses. I've whittled it down and decided I don't want sleeveless or ball gown so my "shortlist" is 51 dresses ?!!!!!!!

I've been married before and only 2 years after getting married I hated looking at the dress, I knew I'd made a mistake ☹️. So I want to make sure that I get it right this time .... but surely I can't go into a shop and ask to try on 51 dresses?!?!?!?

How many dresses did you all try on before finding "the one" and did you do much research online?

I did research online and knew I wanted a ballgown.

I knew I liked lace and I knew I liked Tulle. I visited a store that carried morilee dresses as they're my favourites.

I was told to pick 5. You'll be amazed how many dresses look pants on the hangers, or once on.

Go in and try a couple on. If you don't like those, try a couple more.

Also remember that the store probably doesn't stock all 51 that you like, so that should narrow your choices Smiley winking

FWIW, I tried on 4 dresses and bought the first one I tried on. It was love Smiley smile

I think I not tried about half a dozen. I also knew what I didn't want. Decided I wanted an a line. Preferably pace. Hated it lol. Changed to mermaid so it didn't take many. Out of the 51 as said they won't have them all. But trying be of them may whittle it down more by spotting something you don't like or doesn't suit you. Often we buy something that's nothing like the style we chose as we dnt like it when on. Either way everything you like or don't like will whittle you nearer to the dress of your dreams so don't worry.

I had done some research online/mags so I knew what sort of dresses I was looking for. Thought I was looking for mermaid or fishtail.

The first shop I went in, the lady told me to pick out any styles I liked the look of. Think I tried about 8 in that store, and came away with an idea of one I'd shortlisted. Went to a couple more stores and tried on maybe 3-4.. then the final store I tried on about 5 dresses. The one I got was of course not one I'd set out for in the beginning, and looks nothing like the dresses I'd been pinning on Pinterest!

As others have said its unlikely one store that will stock all 51. Go to the shop, try the ones on they do have and go from there

I had a Pintrest board of ones I liked. I went to Wed2B and tried on 5 there. I went to 3 other bridal shops and probably tried on 30 dresses in total. I didn't do much research online. Everyone I thought I liked online or in magazines I hated them on me! I tried on lots of styles even if I didn't think I'd like it just to discount it.

I've ended up with a dress where the bodice is covered in beads, and previously I'd refused to try on anything with beads!

I was always certain I knew exactly what dress I was going to get...Sophie Tolli Miri!

Before I had even started thinking about dress shopping, I seen a Facebook post about a dress shop near me doing a sample sale and there was a picture of an Allure dress (9068) that was being sold for 1000 off. I didn't think it was very 'me' but decided just to go try it to see. Ended up falling in love with it!! Tried on my dream Sophia Tolli dress and it just did not look right on me at all. And so I ended up buying the Allire 9068...first dress I tried! Just goes to show to go in with an open mind as the dresses never look like they do on the models and what you think you're going to love might end up being completely different to what you end up getting!

I probably tried on about 60 in a lot of different shops over a few months. My dress was actually one of the first ones I tried on but it was very different to my dream dress that I'd seen online. I eventually did try that one and it didn't suit me at all. I did spend a lot of time looking at dresses online but it didn't really help, I would never have picked my dress from the model picture.

When you've tried on a few dresses you'll have a better idea what suits you and I'm sure you'll be able to narrow it down from 51!

I must have tried on 50 or 60 in the end; I visited a lot of shops! Part of the reason was that my mum lives really far away so I visited some shops on my own and then some with her. I knew I wanted a ballgown but other than that I wasn't sure, so each shop I visited helped me get an idea of exactly what I was after. You might find one you love much quicker than me though!

I don't know how many I tried on but I went to four shops, I was looking for something that many shops just did not have, ended up buying one I wasn't sure about, I'm now much happier as I found a beautiful dress in another store which fits amazingly and was in the sale. ? Be ready to give your opinion and have your options open if it doesn't feel right don't let others convince you it is. Also wear a cream or nude strapless bra and some nice similarly coloured knickers, you'll feel a lot better, I was wearing black ones the first time I tried dresses on....

I think I went to about 4 official appointments & tried on about 6-8 dresses in each - I also popped into another shop midweek & tried about 3 on in there on the spur of the moment.

I did do a fair bit of online research to find some designers & styles I particularly liked, but ended up buying a dress I'd never have considered if I'd seen it online or in a magazine, so it may have all been a waste of time in that respect!

If you're drawn to a particular designer it might be worth speaking to local stockists & they can tell you which of their dresses they have samples of, & then if there's any particular ones you have your eye on that they don't have, you could ask them to get a sample in for your appointment, although they may charge you to do this.

I had two appointments. The first was just to see what suited me - I'm very busty and hippy so I was worried about my shape. I tried on three dresses and the whole experience was awful. The shop assistants were useless and none of the dresses suited me.

I researched online (read: Pinterest) and found loads of dresses I liked. I narrowed down what I wanted then stumbled across a dress I loved that was in a shop near me. I went to them and tried it on. It looked dreadful so the assistant pulled out every dress in the shop. I must have tried on 30 dresses and none of the things I liked or that would suit me worked at all. When I found 'the one' she made me keep looking to be sure. And it's nothing like I imagined.

Long story short - don't overthink it. A wedding dress isn't like anything else you've ever bought. Go to a decent wedding boutique and try on every shape until you know what suits you.

I tried on none - I bought mine online for £80 ? It was for sale on preloved having only been used for a photo shoot, and was the one I'd fallen in love with a while before, but didn't dare order direct from the seller as I was dubious about the website. Turns out it's beautiful and after alterations (it's way too long on me), it will be just perfect ? But I know I'm not normal ?? xx

Not sure, but when I started I honestly had no idea, didn't look at any online. First trip I tried on a ballgown, a column, fishtail, a-line and something else, also made sure all these dresses were in a different fabric, so one was satin, lace, chiffon etc, so I could see what to rule out.

Turns out I really like chiffon columns, so went looking through google images finally found "the one" found a localish bridal shop and my god, it looked dreadful on me, I am short and most of my height is my legs, for this dress you need a long torso. I ended up with one similar but I don't think it was the one but nice and don't look back at the photos with regret.

Also I am sorry to do this, but don't rule out strapless dresses, I can't stand strapless either so I ended up with a strapless dress but added straps to mine. My inspiration and the dress I thought was the one was Mori Lee Voyage 6785, which has detachable straps - in the end I bought the straps and had them sewn on.

    Good luck!

Thank you so much all of you for your advice ?

I think I've just been majorly overthinking everything ? being determine not to make the same mistake again by overly excitedly rushing in, with what I thought I liked! and my first wedding, google had just been invented so I couldn't peruse the internet for dresses, whilst I was supposed to be working ?

I've ruled out some shops to go to, as they don't appear to stock the designers that I like. I think that I'm just going to start with a large local shop that has lots of Stella but also Mori Lee and 3 other designers. Like a lot of you have said, I'll try on different styles to see what suits my shape, I'm quite busty that's why I ruled out sleeveless, but if it's only the fact it's sleeveless that's stopping me, I'll still try it on!

Now to get to the gym, so I can start trying all these dresses on ?

Thanks All Again, Happy Thursday! x

I'm a morilee bride - they're quite generous up top (mine is too big haha) and they are SUPER structured. I think they'd hold the ladies up no problem Smiley smile

I tried on about 8 but the 1st one I loved the look of was the one that I picked! I tried on a style that I didn't ever imagine myself wearing and it looked good but I knew in my heart I wanted a ballgown type dress.

    Hi

The first shop I went to was brilliant, Linda the owner made me try on about 6 totally different styles and I fell in love with the first and second dresses I tried on. They were nothing like the dresses I liked on line. In all I think I tried on about 20 or so dresses in 3 different shops.

Linda told me that the dress I woke up thinking about was my dress and I woke up thinking about dress 2

I was going to the gym for several weeks and not seeing any difference, I now go to a personal trainer once a week and after 4 sessions I am having to do my bra up on the next set of hooks, my arms are beginning to look toned and my work suit is feeling baggier ?

Good luck in your quest for the perfect dress
