Witnesses are a legal requirement of people who sign your marriage certificate so have nothing to do with type of ceremony. Everyone has 2.

Might be a silly question but can they be family members?

They can be family members but must be over 16 (I think, might be 18). We got our mums to do it. There are only two signature spaces on the register, so you can't have more than two I'm afraid, OP.

We are having a civil ceremony so the rules may be different but we need a least 2, and can have up to 4, think we're also going with three though

I always thought you could only have two but at my sis-in-law's wedding last year she had four! Myself, my partner (her brother) and her hubby's two sisters :/

We also had 4 witnesses, my CBM, the best man, and then both my sisters in law. They didn't want to be bridesmaids so we asked them to be witnesses instead.

I know it's usually 2, but can be as many as 4. I'd just double check with the person conducting the ceremony to be sure. Can be anyone, i've seen it be parents, brothers, sisters, aunt uncles, cousins, best man & chief bridesmaid, friends, any one really. Plus, there's no age restriction (that's what we were told by our registrar), just as long as the witnesses are of a level of maturity to understand the commitment they are witnessing.

Pretty sure you can have as many as you want (within reason!), you must have two legally though

Ok I was wrong! There are 2 spaces for signatures but it's up to the discretion of the person marrying you whether they'll allow more than one signature per space so you need to ask them. Usually will be 4 maximum due to space issues. You can also ask if more people can 'witness' you signing if you don't sign in front of all guests, without signing as witnesses.

There's no minimum age but the person marrying you needs to be satisfied they are mature enough, so a lot put an age restriction of 16 or 18. But you only need two so could ask if a child can be your 3rd/4th wiitness.
