HRML Is buying a sofa from DFS..

A little idiotic? I'd rather John Lewis or M&S but the wallet says DFS . I have the feeling that they are not renowned for quality. However, there is a leather one that we have both sat on and liked (a rareity). The seat cushions are foam but the back cushions are fibre backed. It isn't mega cheap, but the interest free for 4 years (yes I know you pay for that in the end) makes it seem very appealing right now.

I bought a £2k white leather sofa from DFS 4 years ago (in retrospect white leather and cats is never a good combo anyway). Anyway it's trashed, utterly. Apart from the cat scratches all over it the base in the section I sit on all the time has caved in and one of the arms has also caved in it's only got a sort of flimsy cardboardy interior I think.

Saying that we are planning to buy another sofa from DFS, but it will be a cheap one (the one I fancy is £399) as the cats will ruin any sofa we get anyway.

If you want a decent long lasting sofa I'd say don't go for DFS.

    Hi,

Our main sofa is from DFS, it's a leather corner type thing & it's fab, had it for about 2 & 1/2 years & still as good as new.

We also have a sofa from M&S for the other reception & I HATE it. It's a fabric one & the cushions don't stay in place, overall I'm very dissapointed, thought M&S quality would be better.

We have two cream leather sofas from DFS. They're a couple of years old now and are absolutely fine, other than a biro mark courtesy of our toddler pretty much as new really. We really struggled to find ones which fit our room (odd spaces to fill) and they were they only place we could find something without spending a fortune getting something made and we found them the most comfortable. We did consider some from John Lewis but by the time we picked our options (fabrics and frame) they were about 3 times more expensive and we couldn't see the point in spending that much more money. The ones we got weren't exactly cheap but certainly less expensive than the other ones which were in the running.

We have found that baby wipes are the best thing for cleaning them too so if you do go for it and they try to sell you a cleaning kit say no and get some wipes instead.

OH has broken one up from DFS to go in a skip and it was made from packing crates! He said it was awful! My friend got one from there last year, and its already breaking - saying that they do have a 5 yr warrenty on it, so they are coming to fix it for free!

We have ordered some from www.sofasofa.co.uk and are waiting for them to arrive - very good price, and from ordering to delivery was only 4 1/2 weeks (including a weeks delay due to the snow!) which is v impressive!

Not leather but I bought a three piece suite from DFS about 7 years ago - a fabric one with removeable covers for washing (it included a spare set of covers in a different colour as well). It is still fine and so are the covers in spite of a fair number of washes. The only problem is that one set of covers (a dark green) have faded a bit in the sun but not really the fault of DFS.

I had a fabric sofa from DFS for 8 years which was great - never any problems. And when my H had to cut it up to get it out the house it wasn't made from packing crates!?

Now 3 years into second sofa which is leather and which is fine - no problems at all.

We have DFS sofas and I am very pleased with them, they are very good quality, thick leather. The dogs sit on them, in fact the dogs have the chair and both sit on it for hours a day and it's in great condition 5 years down the line! I'd buy from there again. Saying that, ours wasn't "cheap", 2 sofas and a chair were around £2.5k I recall so it wasn't the cheap end of the scale. I do look after them, I clean them every week with leather wipes and nourish them with leather cream every couple of months.

Our DFS sofas are about 5 years old, I think. They're fine, apart from the paint marks (courtesy of MrC and his "You don't need to cover the sofas, I'm not going to get paint on them that far from the wall...")

I really appreciate you all taking the time to reply. The packing crate story worries me, but I was expecting more of the 'not on your life' style posts. It is a very trivial thing to agonise over really, but we may as well have burnt a pile of cash in the garden when we bought our last sofa. We'd like to avoid that again if we can ?

We got a 3 seat and 2 seat leather reclining sofas from DFS almost 18 months ago and are very happy with them. Everyone comments how comfy they are.

Very sturdy frame and very solid sofas. Again, not the cheapest - roughly £1700 I think but worth every penny. Would definitely buy from them again.

Our 3 seater & 2 seater is 7 years old. Nothing to pay for the first year and then I can't remember what it was. But we did have problems after a couple of months with one of the cushions on the 3 seater. We called them out to replace it or see if it could be padded.

They padded it up and it was worse. They told me that I shouldn't sit on that cushion all the time and a couch isn't made to lie down on. I got it sorted finally after I told them I wasn't going to pay for it and they could take it back. I've never had any problems with the couches since, they are still in really good condition, apart from needing a good clean. lol.

We are thinking of replacing it but only because I want a change of colour.

We were told a similar thing, July. The lady in DFS today told me it was fine because the frame was guaranteed for 10 years. I pointed out that the frame on my crap sofa is fine, it is the cushions that are the problem. I asked her what kind of guarantees came with the cushions and she told me that we would have to ensure that we plumped them up every day, which a) didin't answer my question and b) rings big alarm bells - if a problem arises how do you prove you have?

We have 2 oatmeal fabric 2 seater sofas, an armchair and storage footstool, bought them in 2006 and they are still perfect, the seat custions are a little flatter now but my H bashed the hell out of them sometimes to plump them up and that really helps, when we bought them they sait to do it every night before we went to bed but feck that!!

We paid about £1k for them all in the sale I think.
