I don't have a story to share, as we're not getting married until October (and we're having a Pagan handfasting), but from Humanist ceremonies I've been to in the past, I honestly think it's pretty much all up to you.

From what I can tell, so long as you both agree to marry each other and the celebrant declares it and you have witnesses, that's the only thing you HAVE to do and you can personalise the rest as you please.
Have vows (whether pre-written or your own), readings, songs - it seems like it's mainly up to you and a celebrant will talk through this with you.

I’m not entirely sure, but don’t think humanist ceremonies are legal in England. I say that because my friends had a humanist ceremony last year and I know they had a register office ceremony as well. Not an issue (my friend’s wedding was lovely!) but something to keep in mind if you don’t want to have 2 anniversaries. Otherwise, you should be able to get in touch with a humanist officiant without too much googling who will be able to give you a very good idea what to expect.

    Hi

Ours isn’t until July 2022 but so far our celebrant has been amazing! The personal touch, listening to us, guiding & being creative. It was critical for us that our 6 grown up children (2 + 4) were included in our ceremony to celebrate our blended family joining. Which she has the perfect solution.
We are having the legal bit the same week but very much see our ceremony as our wedding day as it totally our way & personal to us. Good luck xx

We're doing a humanist celebrant too and honestly she's brilliant. It's not legal in England or Wales (it is Scotland, NI and Jersey), although the Humanists are trying to change that.

You can also choose an independent celebrant (so not associated with Humanist UK).
My advice is to select ones that feel right and have chats with all of them! We interviewed about five before we found the right person we wanted to marry us.
It can truly be anything you want. The only thing Humanists don't do is religious stuff. You should check out their website. A lot of information there.
    Best of luck!
