Husband had an odd letter from police. WWYD?

RachelHS, 18 November, 2008 at 10:02 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

My husband had a letter from the police yesterday, telling him that his car had been seen in Windsor on the Saturday before last, with a jacket on the back seat. The letter was reminding him not to leave belongings on sight in parked cars as there had been thefts from cars in that area.

The thing is, he wasn't in Windsor on that date. We were shopping in Reading.

He's now a bit concerned that someone has cloned his car numberplate, and wants to get in touch with the police department which sent him the letter to ask about it... They didn't include a description of the car with the letter so we weren't able to tell if the car which was spotted even looks anything like his.

However, I think it's more likely that who-ever noticed the car with a jacket in it has noted the number plate down wrong.

WWYD? Contact the police, or assume someone made a mistake and forget about it?

Are you sure it's not a friend having a joke? That sounds like the kind of thing some of my friends would come out with.

That sounds really odd to me, doesnt sound like something they would waste their time on. How odd.

I'd contact them just in case. My MIL was at a traffic lights when she saw another car with her number plate on it. She rang the police as she was worried that she would be liabel for any fines or offences generated up by the other car. The police were really helpful with her, so even if it was a mistake and the number plate was taken down wrong it would still be worth a quick chat I think.

Sounds really odd to me. Is this really something the police have time to do?

I've been contacted by the police before about my car which apparently hit a pedestrian in Walworth. At the time, my actual car was in the long stay car park at Luton Airport - and I had the CCTV to prove it.

I sent a letter back to the police explaining that it clearly wasn't my car that had been seen. It turned out that it was a wrongly- recorded numberplate - do you think that that might be the case here?

    I think they would.

I met Mr Nora in a car park for lunch and whilst we were sat chatting in my car, a policeman was walking around each car, peering in through the windows and writing in his notebook. When he peered into Mr Noras car, my OH went over to ask him if everything was ok. The policeman had noted everything that was on show and explained that there had been a lot of thefts reported from the carpark and they were alerting drivers to this fact.

To the OP, its probably worth a call to your local station to ask them if they could check.

My brother has had one of those letters before, so I think it is something our local Police do - we aren't too far from you either by the sounds of it.

I would ring your local station and ask their advice about the potential duplicate number plate.

A quick google has shown that Surrey and Thames Valley Police at least send letters if they spot valuables in cars....so that clears up whether it is a genuine letter from the police.

I reckon they just wrote the numberplate down wrong.

Thanks, all. He was inclined to give them a ring to ask further about it. I'll encourage him to do that...

Hmmm, not sure if this is a connected incident but I thought I'd mention it as it's local - a colleague who lives near Windsor recently had her numberplates swapped on her car - she didn't realise until she parked in Sainsburys at lunchtime, and then couldn't find her car when she came out! She still hasn't got to the bottom of what happened, and what whoever changed her plates were trying to achieve. There's definitely something odd going on in the area with numberplates though...

Really? I don't know who could be that bothered to go about writing a letter pretending to be the police - must have lots of time on there hands.

It's not a friend playing a joke. We don't have any friends who would do something like that, and besides, I doubt they'd be able to get hold of the headed notepaper.

He's tried to phone them, but the PC who sent the letter isn't available today. He's going to try again tomorrow.

I was just going to say PM me and I'll find out for you but if the PC is in tomorrow then it's best to start with him.

The Empty Car Campaign is a big thing in Thames Valley at the moment. I would say about 30% of our daily crime is vehicle interference or criminal damage to vehicles.

We have had all sorts of feedback from these letters. Managed to uncover a car mechanic who was taking his clients cars out over night when the owners thought they were in the garage!!!

If you don't have any luck with the PC tomorrow, send me a PM.
