I hate MOT day :(

Damn thing isn't till 4 so will sit here all day fretting. Car is 12 years old now so the last couple of years it's been a big worry that one day the cost will make it not worth doing. Can't afford a new car (but have made myself feel slightly better working out what I would save if I was without a car for a few months). Usually comes in around the £200 mark, any more than that and I'd have to start thinking.

Last year it ended up being in the garage for 6 weeks, starting 2 weeks before the wedding, which was obviously fabulous timing meaning I spent a lot of time cadging lifts off friends to dress fittings etc. What with the 3 weeks it spent in the garage last Jan when it was broken into, I think I must be owed some sort of insurance rebate, no?

Anyway, any spare fingers available for crossing, keep them crossed for my little green car. I'd like to get another year out of it if poss!

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Sounds like you need it. Do you think there is anything majorly wrong with it?

A friend of mine is really superstitious about green cars....

Nightmare -I know how you feel as I was in a similar situation a couple of weeks ago. I was delighted to find that it was only headlight alignment that needed sorting and the whole bill, incl test, was £51. Hope it works out as well for you!

A word of advice... Nationwide Autocentres do an MOT insurance - for £49 per year they'll cover the first £650 of repairs, unless it's tyres and brake pads or other 'consumables'. Too late for this year but worth thinking about for next?

Hmmm it wasn't a green car superstition, that's just the car I could afford when I bought it! Apparently not much has changed in 7 years....

As far as I know there shouldn't be much to do. Brakes, clutch, gear box, exhaust have all been done relatively recently (within last 5 years) and it's also had it's tyres checked and realigned 6 weeks ago when I got a puncture. But who knows! Last year's long job was that the fuel pipe from filler cap to tank had rotted, had to be ordered from France.

I feel for you. Our car went in for its MOT yesterday and is still there......It is only 5 years old but it looks like it might be an expensive visit. Worst case scenario is over £1000......[:'(]

I know exactly how you feel - my car went in for its MOT and service a couple of weeks ago, and I got it back on Tuesday - £1500 worse off! ☹️

Hope you have a better outcome!
