I

I think I have accidentally bought horrid granny shoes

Iris it could be christmas everyday, 21 December, 2008 at 20:59 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 26

I have bought this dress

http://www.hobbs.co.uk/index.cfm?page=1114&pageNumber=2 (it's the one called "Saffy"). It's wool, sort of jacquard and has a sort of 50s Jackie O type look to it.

The only shoe shop I could get to is Clarks and I literally had about 5 minutes. I've ended up with these

I can't decide if they go with the retro style of the dress or if they are just something a granny would wear. They were cheap and will do for work. It's just that the shop assistant who was about 60 and had Vera Duckworth perm said "I've got those, they're really comfy" ?

I like them, although I have secretly suspected for a while now that I am 33 going on 62. With such a neutral dress your overall look will depend on the accessories. What else will you wear with it (ie bag and jewellery etc.)?

No bag as we're at my parent's for Christmas day. Accessories probably just Links charm bracelet and silver Links necklace, quite plain.

Oh God, I'm going to look like I should be at work.

I cant see the dress - the page keeps coming up as an error. The shoes look fine - I like that sort of tbar style although I would need a higher heel !! Will you be wearing shoes much on the day - I always kick my shoes off as soon as I get to my parents!

I have work shoes, trainers, boots and lots of spangly killer heels. Why do I always leave things so late?

I like the classic look of the shoes but its an outfit I would wear to the office - its fairly prim and proper, traditional smart imo. I like it dont get me wrong, but probably wouldn't wear it out.

Could look totally different with pointed high heels and a wide belt though ?? just a thought.

Good point Smitten. I could wear my far too high patent Mary Janes and then put my slippers on. Or even put the Granny shoes on instead of slippers.

I see you dilemma (but can't see the dress). The shoes wouldn't be my style but my friend wears granny shoes all the time and looks amazing in them so I think it's in how you wear them. Also at this time of year I'd be inclined to say feck it and go for comfort. They aren't hidoues, just a bit plain. They do look very comfy though.

Wear something high and spangley then, or some boots. Although it looks like it's just me who doesn't like the shoes .. and I have poor taste apparently. Did you see the ones I got in the summer that EVERYONE hated?

I like the shoes, but for work not play. (I have some similar ones from Clarks, slightly higher, and I feel a bit Mary Poppins in those.)

I think they would work with the dress. The outfit would look great with seemed stockings.

Love the shoes. They would look funky with some coloured tights.

If anyone can't see the dress it's in Hobbs sale and it's called Saffy. I will have to have a trying on session I suppose. I guess the shoes will do for work if nothing else. Chook-I didn't see those shoes, why did everyone hate them?

Thanks for all the comments though, some ideas for me to try.

Croyde. I sort of agree. The dress does look way better in real life though. I wouldn't waste decent stuff like Hobbs on work though! Trousers and jumpers all the way.

When I go out out I go more sparkly and dressy. Christmas day chez famile Iris is sort of smart but comfortable.

I love the dress but not the shoes, sorry.

I would be tempted to wear high killer heels with it.

I think the dress is dull and ordinary, and the shoes are really frumpy, sorry.

Personally I wouldn'y chose a plain black shift dress and black shoes for Christmas day, as it's too funeralistic.

I think WiseMonkey's right - if the outfit is staying then coloured opaque tights could well be your saviour.

I think the shoes are quite nice (I have some similar ones) but then I'm hardly a fashionista!

I think the black dress and black shoes would look nice, maybe with some coloured or patterned tights to add a bit of colour to the outfit?

It's similar to what I was going to wear on Christmas day except I now have a broken toe and can only get trainers on [:'(]

I'm glad that most of you like the dress as that really does have to say. It cost more than I can really afford so I can't buy anything else. I do have various patterened tights so I can wear some of those. Christmas day is quite hard to dress for, I like to look as if I've made an effort but things like eg my lovely green silk dress are out as silk and gravy are a bad combination. Sexy is really not the look I'm aiming for. Mind you funereal and frumpy weren't high on the list. That'll teach me for trying to look sophisticated.

Jury is still out on the shoes then!

Killer-heel patent Mary Janes sound like they'd work, especially with some interesting tights or stockings.

I'd probably wear the shoes to work, where I care more about comfort and practicality than what they look like. I have Hush Puppies for work - the most comfortable shoes I own, but rather frumpy.

For a dress like you've chosen, I think it would look better with some coloured shoes as long as you could match your accessories to it. If not coloured shoes then something high and spiky might work - patent if you've got them.

?Sounds like the high patent mary janes are the shoes for the job. I only have to walk into the house after all. Will Uggs work after that??

Get some purple fishnets, I think that would help pull the shoes and the dress off. The shoes aren't that bad, obviously they would be if you really were 60 and were wearing them with support stockings and a tweed skirt, but I think it would work!
