i Want to Keep my Dress a Secret

Claire, 26 January, 2025 at 11:38 Posted on Wedding Attire 0 6
So yesterday I said yes to the dress - totally unplanned as I went by myself just to get some idea about what might suit me as I really didn’t have a clue before involving anyone else. Anyway, to cut a long story short I fell absolutely in love with dress number 3 and have ordered it. I rang my mum when I got home and she got all upset and burst my bubble a bit. I’ve lived my entire life with her making comments on how I look, what I wear etc so I wondered if it would be unreasonable/mean of me to say I’ve decided to keep my dress a surprise? Everything to do with the day seems to currently revolve around what will and won’t upset my mum and I’m at the point where I’ve had enough quite frankly. Everyone says it’s your day, plan and do what you want but how is this possible when you have someone in your ear making you feel horrendous about your choices? What’s meant to be a happy time is quite the opposite at the minute ☹️ x

That's one of the first things I learned when planning our wedding - that when it comes to weddings, everyone has an opinion on everything! Keeping your dress a secret sounds very sensible, especially if your mother is likely to make critical comments and spoil your enjoyment in it.

My mother is just the same, but any time she (or anyone else) asked questions about the wedding, we would reply with "We're keeping it a secret so it's more of a surprise on the big day." It's very hard to argue with that and leaves you to get on planning in peace without having to listen to other people telling you what you should do instead!

As you decided about the dress and brought the dress on your own then its the perfect reason (excuse ) for you to keep it a surprise for everyone including Mum, just as RomanticGreenStationery27135 says

    Hello!

It's completely understandable to feel torn in this situation. Weddings can bring a lot of emotions to the surface, and it sounds like you’re dealing with a lot of pressure to please others. It's essential to remember that this day is about you and your happiness. Your feelings and choices are valid, and you deserve to enjoy this special time without undue stress.

That seems extremely daunting! It's fantastic that you found the dress, but I understand how hard it must be to deal with your mother's expectations. Honestly, I don't believe it's unfair to keep it a surprise, especially if it makes you feel more at ease. This is your day, and you should be satisfied and confident in every decision you make. Do not let anyone take your joy! 💖
