i would love for both my dad and my future father in law to walk me down the aisle

Hannah, 7 December, 2023 at 20:23 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 2

My dad and I were extremely close growing up. I was a proper little daddy’s girl. But before my fiancé, I was in an abusive relationship and he manipulated my family into thinking I was the bad guy. When I split up with him, my relationship with my dad went massively downhill. While he has accepted my fiance and gets on well with him now, he’s also said some horrible things about him and I at the beginning. I don’t have the same level of respect (or love to be honest) that I once had for him however he also was everything to me as a child so I do still want him to walk me down the aisle.

My future father in law has been there for me massively since we got together. I struggled a lot with depression and anxiety when my fiance and I first got together due to my past relationship and my future father in law has been so incredibly supportive. He is always there for me when I need him and really helped me through some tough times. He means a lot to me and I would love for him to also walk me down the aisle alongside my dad.

Do you think this would be weird? I don’t care if it’s different or not traditional. Just do you think it would work? Has anyone else done the same or similar?

Thank you in advance

People get walked down the aisle by all kinds of people nowadays - I've seen both parents do it, siblings, close friends...if you want both of them to do it, you should ask.

Your dad may be reluctant to share the privilege, especially if he is traditional. Perhaps explain it by saying that you would like it to symbolise the joining of two families via your marriage? He might feel less threatened that way than if you just tell him you want your Father-in-law to join him.
