I would really value your opinion - charity table names

Kathyw, 3 July, 2008 at 09:30 Posted on Planning 0 7

Hi All,

The HTB and I have, until now, always thought that we'd make a donation to charity instead of buying favours. And that donation would then become the table name.

So, for example, rather than spending 30 quid a table on little favours/gifts, we'd go to oxfam unwrapped online gift thing, and buy - say - a goat, or school books, or a well etc etc...

So, that table would be called "goat" (or school books, or well etc)

Do you get the idea?

The HTB thinks this is really pretentious and like we're making out we're just so generous and telling everyone about how kind and charitable we are.. if you know what i mean.

Do you think that is how it would come accross?

We'd put a card on each place explaining - "instead of wedding favours, we've made a donation to oxfam on behalf of you and your table companions"

I thought it was quite a good idea, but the HTB thinks its really like we're up ourselves.

I would really really really appreciate your opinions!

thanks ;-)

I think its a lovely idea. I wouldn't bother naming the tables after charities or gifts though.

hmm... giving to charity as a guest, in leiu of a bridal gift seems to be a commendable thing but for yourself to give to charity instead of thanking your guests (which is what a favour is really) seems.... well not 'up yourselves' lol by any means, just would surprise and maybe upset me as a guest...

I dunno.... to sit at a table thats 'helping poor and starving children' for example or 'badly abused animals' (strong examples, i know) would quite literally put me off celebrating your wedding....

I love the idea of giving to charity, some people give pins from Cancer research for example, so both parties benefit..... maybe thats something to consider? or have a collection box on the table for the chosen charity??

hope I havent offended ya Smiley smile

Ooh thats a great idea. Give everyone one of those trolley 'pounds' or similar (some do sweets) from your chosen charities. I would say not a collection box though - that would probably pee me off (I don't know why).

I'm not so keen on the idea of naming the tables after charities, and putting the little note saying 'we have contributed on your behalf' etc etc - i do think it is a little pretentious.

the idea of pins is a great one - we are probably going to do breast cancer pins for the ladies (MIL passed away from breast cancer nearly 2 yrs ago) so it is very close to our hearts.

a charity collection box isn't an awful idea though (though i think it would have to be a charity close to your hearts too) - my aunt did this at her wedding instead of a gift list for a charity that supports people with crohn's disease (something she suffers from) - people were more than happy to contribute as they knew how important it was.

    hope that helps x

I agree with not naming your tables after charities, i can't say exactly why, I'm just not keen.

Giving pins or badges is a great idea as your guests get a gift and the charity gets a donation too.

I'm thinking of breast cancer pins for ladies and prostate cancer badges for the guys.

    For what its worth...

If I went to a wedding and this had been done I would think "What a lovely idea..."

    Table names and all.
