Including his football team?

rinylou, 4 September, 2013 at 11:53 Posted on Planning 0 32

Hi all, I'm a brand new Bride-to-Be, just got engaged at the weekend! I have no idea of dates or budgets or anything yet, but I'm such an intrinsic organiser that I can't help but start to plan...

My OH (and his father..!) are lifelong, die hard West Ham supporters. I am just biding my time until he suggests a claret-and-blue themed wedding or - god forbid! - a football shaped cake or something similar. I want to get in there first by suggesting a cute and subtle way of working West Ham/football into the evening reception. Maybe a game or some sort of display? I really have no idea so any suggestions welcome! Smiley smile

My mum and dad are huge West Ham fans, they had Bubbles played at their wedding, please don't do that!! If I'd had a claret and blue wedding it literally would have made my mum's day/week/year/life.

My H is Welsh, so we had personalised cake toppers with him in a Wales rugby shirt. Maybe you could have something like that but with your OH in a West Ham shirt?

I feel your pain, my OH and the majority of his family are HUGE Sheffield Wednesday fans and he wanted a blue and white wedding. I obviously said no but we are trying to work his blue and white in, in other areas. We're having a candy cart and the candy bags are white with Wednesday blue (Royal blue) writing on them. I can only suggest you come to some sort of compromise! Good luck!!

I can't believe I forgot about the bubbles! Working bubbles in (the actual things, not the song!!) might be just the ticket. I also quite like the cake topper idea! Even though I'm sure it would turn the stomachs of my Chelsea-supporting father and brother..! I'm going to do some cake topper research - thank you! Smiley smile

AND ALSO - do you support a different team? I am welsh, and my local team is Swansea City (I am, however, not a football fan). Anyway - this was my "A PROMISE TO MY HUSBAND" which I wrote on the first page of our best wishes book: (It could work for you too....)

    A PROMISE TO MY HUSBAND

    Today you’ve embellished your life

By choosing to make me your wife,

    So my promise is to

    Make it better for you

By easing your troubles and strife

Now I know that your past has been blighted

By a team who’ve not left you delighted,

But I’ve fixed that for you

And so now you’ll be true

To the Swans, and not West Ham United.

I'm a big West Ham fan and I'm lucky enough to be the resident magician in the hospitality suites at Upton park on match days. My wife wore a West Ham garter on our wedding day!

West Ham garter!! Amazing idea!! I'm going to buy one straight away... although I think I still need to think about how to incorporate the Hammers in in a little more public manner Smiley winking

In terms of a more public idea(!), you could have West Ham themed table names? Name them after West Ham players?

    Evening?

I was going to suggest table names, or a football themed bride's speech, but neither of those are generally in the evening.

I would say probably just individual cake toppers on cupcakes for dessert, something simple like that that's a little 'nod' to his passion. If you're having a sweetie cart you could have the bags/cones etc in the colours...

Awh this post has just made me realise my poor H2B has just been going along with most things I decide and there's nothing really for him as its quite girly lol. He's a massive rugby fan and plays every week and he's inviting a load of lads he plays rugby with so maybe I should do something for him as a surprise, God knows what though!

If you can find a compromise with your H2B regarding his football team and somehow link it then it would be lovely as it is both your special day so should be something for both of you's xx

Those are so cute and exactly what I pictured - but I had a word with the H2B and he's apparently anti cake toppers in general!! Might have to work on him...

My H is a west ham fan too. I had a west ham garter and flashed it to everyone when we played bubbles!

I also wrote them and they sent us a letter congratulating us on the wedding which my dad gave H at the wedding. x

I'm the football fan in our house, I'm a Southampton fan and although he goes to watch Reading occasionally, he doesn't want anything football related at the wedding. (Who's the woman in this relationship?!?!) Smiley smile

I love the idea of the bubble machine though, if our budget can stretch to one, I'd love to get one!! I think naming the tables is a good idea, there are so many fantastic West Ham players throughout history that would be ideal even if you had 20 tables!! You could do the seating plan in the style of a football pitch.

Have you chosen your colours yet? Purple is quite popular, that could be a nod to half of West Ham's colours!!

I've just remembered that M&M's do personalised sweets for weddings, I'm sure you could find claret and blue ones as favours, or part of the sweet table??

I'd go with the football grooms cake as a surprise for him, or cake toppers..table names something like that. Or maybe a little cupcake tower near wedding cake that are west ham based? I like the letter from football club idea as well, think that's something my OH would like and going to try and organise that for him.

Without wishing to sound like a pooper.......Beware that bubbles residue can get very slippery on hard floors, so some venues won't allow them indoors for elf and safety reasons....

    Peter

First Dance...get the DJ to mix up West Hams colours in the lighting mix........That would surprise him......

I made a bouquet and buttonholes for a Burnley FC Fan! She sent me some badges/pins which I included in the bouquet and also into the buttonholes. There are more photos of how the football incorporated their day here:

My OH is a big Liverpool fan, so our tables were called things like Gerrard, Rush, Dalglish, Keegan... you get the idea. No prizes for guessing that our top table was called Shankly.
