Ingrown toenail (nice...)

HatTrick, 12 March, 2013 at 11:06 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 36

Ouch! These are the most painful things ever.

Trying to pluck up the courage to have it removed...

Haha what a variety of pics we have shared this week! It just looks normal, it's only a tiny piece of nail digging in but my word it kills if you knock it. I've always suffered with them, dr's say it's from wearing pointe shoes many years ago.

I had one operated on last year, I can send you a pic of the gruesome aftermath if you like!

Is it just ingrowing at the top? If so, you can put something underneath it, between the nail and the toe, to keep it from digging in while it gets better. I have done this before. I cut a strip from the sticky bit of a plaster and inserted it between toenail and toe (about 2 mm down into the top corner of the nail), then wrapped the remainder of the plaster around my whole toe.

But if it's ingrowing at the bottom, you need to have it removed!

In the meantime, you can help it by not wearing tight or overly wide-toed shoes.

I make them worse for myself footlong. I'm supposed to train the skin to grow around them but never do so when I cut my nail the bit at the edge ends up being cut short and this then grows under my skin if that makes sense? So then it grows kind of into the toe, I'll manage to cut it out eventually which relieves it for a bit but then we're back to square one when it grows back.

I had the one sorted last year and they put a chemical at the root to stop it growing back. They said it would only affect the side so my nail would normal but I am left with a deformed nail. It also bloody hurt so I'm putting off having this one done, should have just had then both done together.

Haha I did consider that Bonnie. I can kind of camouflage it with nail varnish though.

I had an infected to since christmas.

It started at my wedding *blush* where I stubbed/got trodden on because the next day it was blue. Then purple. By Christmas the old nail came off to reveal a new one, half-way up the nail bed. The skin around the new nail became red and tender shortly after the old nail came off. Then it started oozing. It was grim! Being in the 'antibiotics are over-prescribed' camp I was determined that my body would do its job eventually if I kept it clean, saline soaked it daily and let the air get to it.

It didn't. About two weeks ago the infection ramped up a gear and I had to take co-codamol to sleep through the throbbing. I finally went to the Drs and have been given a mega-dose of antibiotics. If the nail doesn't grow proerly after the infection has cleared, I'll need toe surgery too. We can have defromed toe nails together!

You have my sympathy, it hurt like a B!tch.

Oh Ducky that sounds delightful. You definitely pass the criteria for entry to the Manky Toe Club. Shall we swap pics? ?

I don't have picture of when it was oozy (although I think it is beginning to get oozy again, *sob*).

I shaved my toe especially for the Dr. <---That makes me laugh at myself!

2 tips ive had in the past is to cut a V shape in the middle of ur nail and take ur scissors and rub on top of ur nail a few times (not too many!) to create a groove on top of the nail.

Apparently both of these encourage the nail to grown more towards the middle!

I would just like to have some toe nails. Netball and running seem to have killed off mine.

Mrs Bass beat me to it , was also going to suggest the v cut in top of your nail, this worked for me but is rather odd looking.

This is the one that has grown back. It's all bumpy and hanging off on the left side.
