injured fox - who do you call?

ebee, 19 June, 2008 at 11:36 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

there's a young fox which lives around our area.... a few times he's looked to have an injured back leg, but today I spotted him and his leg was just dangling and he looked painfuly thin. what should I do? I don't like to just leave him to it, nor do I want to leave out food as I have two young boys who play in the back garden... (is it the sspca who deals with this sort of thing? when I looked at their website it was more about pet cruelty than wildlife)

we're in Scotland.. ?

I had an injured fox in my garden

I called my local wildlife rescue centre. They asked if I was able to get within 1 metre - if I could, then they would come and collect it. However, despite it's injury it was still quite nimble so I couldn't get that close.

They said then that if I was prepared to put food out for it and establish a feeding routine, then they could give me some antibiotics to try and help it heal.

I did this, but the fox didn't come regularly and eventually disappeared.

Why would you not want to put food out?

? thanks louM I will give them a call and see what they suggest. Baublegirl I don't want an injured and therefore unpredicteable wild animal getting too close to my garden ... i have two toddlers (15 months and nearly 3) who wouldn't have the sense not to go near it if it came to them looking for food. ?

I have called the RSPCA on 2 occasions - once for an injured hedgehog in the garden and the other time for a baby pigeon.

Both times they came out and collected the animals.

So I imagine the SSPCA would be a good place to start. When i called re the pigeon, they asked if I could take it to the vets, but the vets were closed at that time and I did't want to call them out as an emergency, so the RSPCA came out.

Sorry - I think my question came across a bit aggressive - it wasn't meant to ?

I have two littlies too - and we just put food out in the evening when the kids were in bed. TBH it's very rare that they'll go anywhere near humans, especially small noisy ones!

Hope you find someone who can help you, it's sad when you see any animal in a bad way like that. I'm fairly sure ours went off and died somewhere which makes me very sad ☹️

However we now have a young one who comes and plays in the garden while the boys are having their bedtime stories, so there is a happy ending of sorts

I phoned the place LouM suggested and they are going to see if they have anyone in the area to come and take a look. ?

baublegirl.. that's ok, it's just that the fox doesn't seem too scared of humans (we live in the city) so I couldn't be sure he would steer clear of the boys if there was food around ?
