Insurance

Jenny, 30 August, 2021 at 17:09 Posted on Planning 0 6

Anyone struggling to get insurance? I need £5m for my venue as it's quite old but I'm really struggling as people either not selling insurance or policy is up to £1m.

Any help appreciated!

    Hi.

A £5m wedding would be amazing but its just the venue that requires that level of cover for public liability. The other wedding costs are very small!

The public liability insurance at 5mil that we've seen is managed and had by any suppliers we have booked. The wedding insurance should be something different as far as I'm aware! For example our wedding dj is fabulous and our venue asks for £1m liability but he has £5mil.

Worth clarifying with your venue if you're not sure!

Public liability insurance should be provided by the venue, not you, it covers if their caterers caused someone an allergic reaction, if someone injures themselves while in/on property grounds etc. Wedding insurance is to cover lost costs of what you've spent on hiring the venue, decorations , flowers, wedding clothes etc

We have the same situation, our venue requires us to get our own £5m public liability- difficult at the moment, and our general wedding insurance only covers up to £2m. We’re not getting married till next year so I’m planning to check again in 2022 and if it’s still the situation will raise with the venue, as they may have a solution/suppliers to recommend

For the very first time ever I have recently been asked by a couple to send proof of my public liability insurance as the venue required it. This is a new thing. As has been mentioned by Ladybird1088 and others I don't get why the venue want the couple to have public liability insurance as that's not what it is designed for.

    Hi Guys,

Long time planner, first time poster here (due to wed July 2022). The following is just an educated guess (im no lawyer, i just working in contracts Smiley smile )

Not seen this personally, however a venue may require a couple to have public liability insurance to indemnify you (as the couple) for accidental damage caused to third party property and injury or death to third parties that all guests invited to the wedding are legally liable for.

Essentially you are responsible for your guests behaviours/actions and if someone knocked over a priceless vase you may have financially accounted for the cost of a few cracked champagne flutes but the venue would then want you to replace/pay for the vase at which point you would likely call upon your public liability insurance to cover this.

Venue's will also have public liability insurance themselves but possibly wouldn't want to be claiming on this, hence the request for you to have your own.

Im afraid I can't offer advice on what to do as the value of £5m is high (unless you are a business yourself) but I hope the above offers an explanation as to why they may be asking for it.

    xxx
