Interior designers ... need help with a bay window dressing

Peaches, 27 May, 2009 at 18:23 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

I've got a bay window in a property I'm about to let. It's on a busy main road with a path right outside. Ground floor.

Before the fire it had nets and curtains and was used as a bedroom, but now I'm going to change tack and let it as a single family home, so room will become a reception room - living / family room.

I don't want to put nets in, and would love to put blinds and voiles to keep it light and airy, but blinds will mean that every man and his dog can see in when the blinds are up.

Not wanting to spend mega bucks, what would you suggest instead? Will I have to go back to the nets / curtain route? Or is there something modern but keeps nosey parker's prying eyes out during the day, and then blocks the view with lights on at night?

You could use vertical blinds so they can be tilted that people can't really see in, would work ok with a modern feel and I've had them in rental properties in the past.

We have a bay window and nothing other than curtains that rearely get closed but we do have a small front garden so I suppose that reduces the chances of people looking in , if they stare in we usually wave at them ?

I don't think any of my neighbours have anything other than curtains or blinds tbh, not nets/voiles that I can recall

Is it Venetian blinds you were thinking of? If so depending on how you tilt them they can stop people having a clear view in but still let in loads of light.

Is it a square bay or a rounded one? We have loads of bay windows down our road and most people with square bays have thin white roman blinds on the main front windows of the bay, but nothing on the two sides. And curtains too. Blinds and curtains are opened during the day, blinds lowered towards twilight, and curtains drawn after dark

what about something like this for daytime privacy but good natural light, dressed with curtains for the evening

A neighbour of mine has specialist blinds can be left closed at all times, yet let light in and don't let outsiders eyes in when the lights are on. Just done a quick google serach but can't find the supplier

We have a bay window with venitian blinds and curtains. When you tilt them they let in the light but no one can see in - they are great - And were only cheap from Ikea. The curtains soften them a bit and we pull them to keep the heat in in the winter.

There is a pic here, you can't see them well but a little bit at the side...

We have the white mesh style blinds that are fitted into the windows themselves, that you can leave down all day. They let the light in but you can't really see through them and then at night they give some privacy.

Thanks everyone. Sorry for abandoning the post .. had to go out.

I really like the idea of mesh roller blinds. Had already looked at some online, but wanted to see if you guys had any other ideas. I really like the ones from The Blind Company, but they are hugely expensive. I was thinking more along the lines of B&Q-esque prices! Something cheap(er), but put up nicely with attractive rails with either voiles or similar to set it off.

Venetian blinds are a no-no as they really collect the dust, and as this house is on the main road, it does get really dusty. I have a real thing about venetians too as I was made to clean them so many times in my previous life!

Any ideas for where to go for these see-through mesh blinds that don't cost the earth?

Thanks for the pictures and links. Very helpful.

Where did you get your ones from Peanut?

I'm going out this morning to try and find some blinds so the builders can fit them for me when they've finished the house
