Invitations for wedding abroad.

Serafina, 26 April, 2009 at 11:21 Posted on Planning 0 2

When should I send invitations for a wedding abroad?

I am getting married abroad next year in February and wasn't planning to send out proper invitations until September/October time as it seems a bit ridiculous sending them this early. However, we have obviously told friends and family the date and venue already and very close family who are certain of their invites have already started to book flights and accomodation to get the best deals on the low-cost airlines etc.

The problem comes with more distant family and friends. Some have assumed that they will be invited and are asking about flight information, but I hadn't actually budgeted on having them! Whilst others that I would like to come do not want to book anything until they actually have an invite.. despite the fact that prices for flights etc will rise in the meantime...

Fot those of you who have had, or are thinking of having, a wedding abroad- when did you send out your invites and had you already firmly told people whether or not they were invited in advance?

Thanks

We're getting married in Vegas in October. We sent out 'Save the Date' postcards last November. They had a picture of the Welcome to Las Vegas sign on the front and printed on the back and they said:

"Andy & Maria are tying the knot on (date) in fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada!

We would love it if you could join us there. If you can't, don't worry. You can still help us celebrate our marriage at a second reception we will be hosting in London on November 14th, 2009. Please keep these dates free in your diary. Invitations will follow closer to the time.

If you can come to Vegas, we'd appreciate if you could let us know as soon as you decide.

Please visit our website, (free weddingpath website address) for more about our plans and info on hotels etc."

For 100 postcards with our message from VistaPrint, we only paid £14 in total. Sending out Save the Dates worked well for us. No one has just assumed they are invited now. We'll be sending out proper invitations in June as well as invitations to out London reception and the after party.

Having a website has proved a good idea too. We've been able to put information on great hotel deals on it and people coming have been able to leave messages on our message board telling us what their travel plans are.

We've been surprised at how many people have said they are coming. At the moment, we have 52 definites and 12 maybes.

Where abroad are you getting married?

We're getting married at Lake Bled in Slovenia- a very small wedding with about 15 guests.

The problem I can forsee with 'save the dates' is that they don't actually state who exactly is invited do they? We have situations where a particular person is invited, but not their partner/ partner's children etc. because in some cases we don't even know them and want to save the limited places for actual friends/family.

Perhaps I could send out 'save the dates' with people named at the top.. not sure.

We are getting married in Portugal in September this year, so sent out STD's in the christmas cards (got 100 business cards made up for free with vista print), and invitations went out in March so that people would be able to book cheap flights. There is also our wedding website which has everything a guest could possibly need!
