Invites shared with out permission

HappyPurpleDecor18768, 13 January, 2021 at 17:04 Posted on Planning 0 4

Hi,

last year I won my wedding invites and I am so grateful to the company that has given them to me. However the invites got shared on Facebook and Instagram with my name tagged in that post. so everyone on my friends list could see the time, date and location of my wedding. Also, I don't use my real name online for personal reasons and my real name was exposed to a lot of people that otherwise would never have known.

I understand that I won the invites but was she allowed to do this? Is it right to let her know how I feel after she's given me these invites for free?

Oh gosh that does not sound good. It sounds like a breach of data protection. Did you sign up to any terms and conditions? That said, I don’t really know what you can do at this point. It won’t make it any better, will it? If you would like her to take the post down, just ask nicely and she will likely oblige, although she may ask to repost with identifying information blurred out, which would seem a fair compromise.

I was wondering about the data protection act and there was no terms and conditions listed on the competition stating that by entering you have to share the invites with everyone on her page. To be honest I would have been ok with her sharing the design and just blurring the information out or even making one with fake information to display her work.

It is a GDPR breach, clear and simple. It's also put you in an awful position with your personal information being shared, plus, everyone who has now seen it/shared it will now expect an invite.

I'd contact the supplier and ask to have the post removed/edited, and with an apology posted, too. Doesn't matter whether or not you paid for the item, your personal information is yours, not theirs!

I agree. Unless it was part of the T&C, it's a HUGE GDPR breach. I'd expect the post to be removed immediately and a groveling apology, since this has caused you a huge amount of embarrassment.

I'm hoping the supplier is new to the job and will learn from this mistake. I certainly wouldn't want to use anyone who would splash my private details around like that!
