Irish love poems, are you having one?

Mrs Bass, 5 July, 2010 at 19:54 Posted on Planning 0 9

Ok so KatieInWonderland has got me thinking about my readings!

we have decided to have my mum and OHs brother in law to do one.

As my OH is from Northern Ireland, I think it will be lovely for his BIL to read an Irish love poem.

Ive done a few google searches but when i find an appropriate on, it suddenly mentions God.

I was just wondering if anyon is planning on having or had an irish love poem at a civil ceremony or if you can suggest where I might find one!

thanks!! x

Sorry, I don't know the terminology - did you just mean a love poem by an Irish poet?

If so, how about the Yeats?

Im after reading for during the ceremony, it can be a poem, blessing or lyrics.

Ive found this one which I quite like but as its a civil ceremony im not allowed to h religious mention, is it ok to edit those bits out?!

"May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields.
    And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

May God be with you and bless you:
May you see your children's children.
May you be poor in misfortune,
    Rich in blessings.
May you know nothing but happiness
    From this day forward.

May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the warm rays of sun fall upon your home
And may the hand of a friend always be near.

May green be the grass you walk on,
May blue be the skies above you,
May pure be the joys that surround you,
May true be the hearts that love you."

thanks for the help and the Yeats suggestion!! my search continues!! ?

    Hi Mrs Bass

I look at Yates last night, they one you have above, it's lovely one

i found this one, hope this helps, i will keep looking for you if that okay

Irish Blessing for a bride to her groom and vice versa:

You are the star of each night,
You are the brightness of every morning,
You are the story of each guest,
You are the report of every land.
No evil shall befall you, on hill nor bank,
In field or valley, on mountain or in glen.
Neither above, nor below, neither in sea,
    Nor on shore,
In skies above, nor in the depths.
You are the kernel of my heart,
You are the face of my sun,
You are the harp of my music,
You are the crown of my company.

Why not just have the last two verses of your poem - print them on a sheet and show them to your registrar that way with the god bits all ready removed. I can't see why it would be a problem.

Thank u, an email is winging its way to you!

snurtin123- my OH was really keen to have an Irish voice during the ceremony (OH has lived here for 19 years so although he still has one, its not as strong as his families) and im really keen to have a "representative" from both sides of the family. I think an Irish poem will really pay homage to his family and his roots and (im hoping) sound really nice, especially with the stong accent!
