Irritable Bowel Syndrome, any one suffer from this?

Sunny Day, 13 December, 2008 at 21:18 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 19

Hi Guys,

Do any of you have any exerience of IBS? I've always suffered with random tummy aches and needing to rush to the loo, especially if I'm stressed.

(TMI) The past 2 days after I've eaten my main meal I've been getting horrendous tummy cramps and wind. It kind of comes in waves and the pain subsides once it bubbles up in my tummy, then I end up on the loo all night with diahreah (sp?). Its happened again tonight and I don't know what to do, Its horrible :-(

Can you reccommend taking anything? I've got no clue what to take, is there something I could take before eating so it doesn't irritate my tum? I feel like giving up eating because I'm alright when I don't!

Thanks, sorry its tmi but I'm really suffering!!!

Peppermint oil works (colpermin, you can buy it at Tesco now) I also find that sometimes having a bath straight after eating when the cramps start can help avoid or lesson the diaoreah.

You have my sympathies I know how you feel ?

I second Colpermin. Also Mebeverine (Colofac) tablets. I'm another that gets stress related IBS and when I get a really bad attack I find that taking 1 Mebeverine and 1 Colpermin together, an hour before eating, every day for a week or two really does the trick.

I also found out I have a caffeine allergy which causes horrendous stomach upsets in me.

If this is a new thing, you should get it checked out by the GP to be on the safe side.

Thanks Bowski, I can't leave the house right now! but will def get some in the morning. May go and have a bath though.

Do you take it as a routine thing or just when you start getting the pains? Does peppermint tea help too, maybe I could drink that?

Oh, Caffine, I don't normally drink tea or coffee but have had quite a few cups of tea this week, and coca cola yesterday and today, which I hardly ever drink

I just do it when I get the pains working on the period pains principal of them being eased by water. I'm sure peppermint tea would help but I don't drink tea so I've never tried.

I know this one will sound really funny, but have you tried to drink any lemonade? Sounds funny but if it's really fizzy it will make you burp and get rid of the wind! My aunty told me about this a day after our wedding when I had a really bad attack, and it worked on me the other day!

The only other things that work for me is a hot water bottle, and a bath!

Good luck, but cant say enough how much the leonade trick has worked!

It could be related, possibly. Caffeine is a stimulant and it can over stimulate the gut and cause those symptoms.

First of all ? I suffer from it on-and-off.. Had it for about 10 years so far..

I have about 1 or 2 cups of tea a day, but then in the afternoon I have peppermint tea (works the same way as Colpermin) and then some Camomile tea before bed..

I stay WELL away from white bread, as well as white pasta, as well as potatoes.. Just find that the brown bread and pasta works better for me!

Thanks all, I will def be heading to the supermarket tomorrow to stock up on all of your suggestins including lemonade (I have heard that before somewhere), I'm fed up of worrying that once I eat I'll be in pain. I've been fine all day and now feel rubbish.

I'm going to have a bath and see if that eases it a bit, thanks again.

Same as some other have mentioned- stress, caffene, white flour.I drink decaf tea/coffee or rooibos.

I used to work in a chemist, the pharmacist used to recommend carbonated water and colpermin

Will second the white flour thing, I find I am way worse afterwards. Without sounding like an ad., what really worked for me was the Slimming World diet. Some of my friends found the same. If it's new and undiagonsed tho, you really should see a doc. The tests are unpleasant but, it's better to have the reassurance it's 'only' IBS. I have my own theories on my condition, but for me it's stress-related and I tend to eat the wrong 'comfort' foods too (such as half a loaf of white toast with butter and jam).

Peppermint works wonderfully, however you take it and I always have a HUGE supply of antacids (mine presents along the whole digestive tract). Make sure you make time for you and relax as often s possible. Alcohol makes mine worse (I was teetotal for 6 years as result). Be wary of caffiene (I can drink tea but not coffee), and milky drinks don't help either (although strangely, not other dairy). Try extra roughage, but that said things like Fibogel didn't help, I found natural roughage, like fruit and veg are much better HTH x

I think you should try and identify anything that might set it off for you. Personally I don't have a problem with caffine, bread etc but I get it really bad if I eat raw most fruits and vegetables. I'd also second the diet thing. I have been doing weight watchers for a couple of months now and have only had a small attacke of it when I tried to see if I could eat some apples.

Can I suggest you go and visit your GP and explain the symptoms you've been having - what ever measures you take yourself, it's worth getting a checkup to make sure there is nothing underlying going on.

I have an ibd and get attacks very similar to what you are describing - it is like waves going through you. As soon as I get any diaorrhea at all, I take Imodium. This is very effective, I do not find that colofac works at all for me.

The doctor has confirmed to me that it is fine to do this. I would suggest trying those and also getting an appointment with the doctor.

    Hello

I am so sorry you are suffering, it really does make you feel rotten.

Please see your GP as many of the bowel diseases have similar symptoms so it needs to be diagnoised properly.

    Take care

(oh and keep a diary of what you eat and when you have the attacks or any other symptoms xx)

Proper probiotics (ie not gittish drinks or yogurts from the Supermarket) can help - definitely helped me with IBS and food intolerances.

    Thanks for all your messages!

I had a nice bath and hot water bottle and it eased a bit, then went to sleep and have been fine today.

I did go to the docs years ago about it and I was getting loads of pains but may be worth another visit as it was probably 8-10 years ago.

I will start keeping a food diary, I know bananas are def a trigger, and I'm thinking coke/fizzy drinks are also not good! I had some allergy testing done ages ago and also cheese is another one I try and avoid.

Thanks for your help, I did feel rubbish last night but thankfully I've been ok today xx
