Is 2 bottles of wine per table enough????

surfgirl, 23 March, 2010 at 15:12 Posted on Planning 0 12

Hi everyone, i'm just working out what drinks i'll be supplying, this is my plan-sparkling wine on arrival, then a bottle of red and white on each table(and a jug of orange per table)Then sparkling wine for the toast. We're having round tables of between 8-10 so i was going to buy 8 spare bottles in case it goes, but do you think that's enough and how do i know if people will drink more white or red??? Thanks for you opinions

Rule of thumb goes that you should have half a bottle of wine per person. HTH

    HI

I have heard provide 1/2 bottle per person. but last wedding I went to covered 1/3 bottle per person. I think I will make judegement on whos on each table e.g. my sisters table will be filled with her children therefore wont need as many bottles, but, like your self my tables seat 8-10, for my friends table I will fill the table with wine, they will be merry hell if I dont!

You also have to bare in mind ' what if no one likes red/white 10 people sharing one bottle might be a bit much. Maybe its worth speaking to venue as well to see what they advise.

Thanks for the replys,i'll have to do some thinking about this, it's stressful this wedding planning lark(nice stressful though!!) I would guess white would be more popular but then i'm nervous i'll buy more of one and then everyone wants the other, but i'm also thinking if i wanted to get more bottles on the day i'm sure they wouldn't say no. Sorry for the rambling!

    Dont panic.

If your meal is chicken /pork go for more white. Also cant you do a quick sweep of people and find out what they prefer? we have put it as one of our questions on our wedding website. Bare in mind as well, some people wont drink wine at all and will just have soft drink or go to bar and by different one - it will be fine.

The standard argument is 1/2 a bottle of wine per person, so I'd go for more - maybe look at 4 bottles per table? Or at least allowing that much in reserve.

Re drinking there are different views - women never used to drink red but do a lot more now. I do receptions for work and generally the same amount of each gets drunk. It also depends on your food - I wouldn't want red with chicken for example.

Im the same as you with 2 bottles...my mum is buying those and they are £15 a bottle and we have 5 tables. im not being tight but i dont really want to pay for other people to have anymore than that as they are eating out on us for free too and we are trying to stick to a budget...also i was thinking i might just have 2 bottles of white as the main course is chicken with white whine sauce hmm...also i think that if they need anymore drink then they need to go to the bar themselves and get me one as its my wedding and the day is about me hahahaha...dont think my mum would laugh at that but H2B would lol

As said, the guide to serving wine is 1/2 bottle per person. The rule of glasses per person from wine is 4 and champagne 6.

As for white vs red. It does depend on people's preferences really, can be hard to judge.

We're having lamb so most people would probably opt for red. Of course there are some people who don't pair their wine with their dinner so will opt for the white regardless. We're working on half a bottle per person but a ratio of 0.3 red and 0.2 white per person.

We're being really stingy, lol, and not having wine on the tables. The bar will be open from after the ceremony so people will be able to get their own.

We're doing a drink on arrival, a drink for the toast then tea and coffee in between so they can get the room re-set.

Thanks everyone,i'm a panicker. I think i'll go for 2 white and 1 red per table, i'm hoping this will be plenty( there's a few under 18's and some non-drinkers) Plus 2 glasses of sparkling wine and orange juice and coffee's!!! It's going to bankrupt me ha ha, i want to do it properly though, thanks again x

If someone else was paying then yeah most definately, lol!

I might add some closer to the time if we've got the money left in the budget.

Can you supply your own booze? I'm supplying lots of booze but it's working out very cheap for us to do this.

    We're allocating per person:

1/2 bottle fizz for drinks reception (while photos are being taken) - there is 2 hours from start of ceremony to start of dinner
    1/2 bottle wine
    1/2 bottle schloer (non-alcoholic)
1 glass of port for the cheese course
1 glass of fizz for the toast
    plus jugs of water

it's costing us around £4.80pp for all the booze. Our corkage is per person (£8.50) noit per bottle so works out really cheap.

Obviously I see a lot of weddings as a photographer - I usually get on really well with my couplss and end up being treated as as a guest at mealtime several times a year (I dont ask for this)

You will usually do ok if you have 2 bottles on the table at the stat of the meal and then produce another couple mid way through the main course - If you are supolying the wine it may be worth having a few bottles in reserve as there are normally 1 or 2 tables who drink more than others. If you are supplying your own tesco used to offer sale or return and also free glass hire for events (Some wine merchants willalso offer sale or return)

Also think about a jug of water or 2 on the tables - will make everything else go further
