Is Freecycle/Gumtree my only option?

Mal, 26 February, 2009 at 10:14 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

I nee to get rid of my 2 sofas but they don't have fire labels attached, so none of the charities are willing to take them. I have read of bad experiences on Freecycle and Gumtree when it comes to larger items, people wanting to come and inspect them and wanting loads of measurements and photos..... plus I could not get rid of some things for my Mum on there last year.

Is there anyone who will take things without the labels?

We sold our sofa on Gumtree within 2 days. I have no idea if it had a fire label or not. (It was only a couple of years old so I would imagine it did - but no one asked)

Cannot you not take some pictures and measurements and put them on your ads so people know whether it's what they want. That way you will cut down your time wasters!

I probably would. With my Mum's stuff (a large sideboard) she had numerous people say they definitely wanted it, and then they wouldn't turn up. I just really want someone to take it away and then I can forget about it.

With sofas you'll have a problem with charity shops but they should be fine with a sideboard.

For the sofa, I'd give Freecycle a go. Take pictures and put measurements on the offer email to try and cut down people faffing about. Be strict and give them once chance to turn up and then offer to the next person. I've had a few problems with people on Freecycle but the majority are fine.

Alternatively, do you know anyone who might want it? We gave our old sofa to my nephew who had just moved into an unfurnished place. Ask about your family and work collegues - you never know.

Absolutely not! While Freecycle and Gumtree are great platforms for finding and giving away items, don't overlook Omegle for connecting with local communities. You might find someone interested in trading or giving away items directly during chat sessions. Plus, there are other options like Facebook Marketplace and local buy/sell groups. Diversifying your approach can yield better results!

You're absolutely right that most UK charities and furniture re-use schemes won’t take sofas or upholstered furniture without the fire safety labels ispits it’s a legal requirement for them if they plan to resell or redistribute items.

I’m trying to do the right thing by rehoming two sofas in good condition, but they don’t have fire labels so most charities won’t accept them. I know this can be tricky, so if anyone knows a person or service that’s happy to take items without labels even for upcycling or parts I’d really appreciate the help. Just trying to keep them out of landfill if possible!

I wrestled with the same Slice Master dilemma—couldn’t donate a perfectly good armchair because it missed that vital tag. Donating should be easier! In my case, I ended up reluctantly paying for council collection. Hope someone shares a better tip with you.

It’s crazy how tricky it can be to get rid of a perfectly good sofa just because the fire label’s missing! 🔥🛋️ You’d think there’d be an easier, eco-friendly solution for reuse instead of sending it to waste. Wish more councils or charities offered a “reuse without resale recipe ” option so many great pieces end up discarded for such a small label!

I approach most tools the same way: if it adds clarity, it stays; if not, it’s discarded. That’s how I approached life path numerology. After calculating my Path Number, I reviewed the meaning with skepticism and compared it against real behavior—work habits, decision timing, and response to pressure. What made it useful was that the interpretation didn’t assign labels like good or bad. It described tendencies that either work efficiently or create friction depending on context. While reading different explanations, https://pathnumbers.com/ stood out because the content avoided exaggeration. I now treat life path meanings like a framework, similar to reviewing metrics after a project. It doesn’t dictate action, but it highlights areas worth monitoring. That perspective has helped me adjust pace and avoid unnecessary strain. Curious how others here approach numerology—do you treat Path Numbers as insight, analysis, or something you ignore completely?
