Is it true, wedding rings have to be blessed?

zoej1983, 15 April, 2009 at 22:53 Posted on Planning 0 4

My mum has said to me that our wedding rings have to be blessed, I had my wedding ring made by a local jeweller and my H2B wanted the ring I bought him for our engagment cleaned and engraved with our wedding date. The ring means so much to him he didnt want another ring.

So because mine has been made and H2B is his previous one am just wondering if I need it done how do I go about it?

Thanks in advance

If you are having a church ceremony then your rings will be blessed as part of the service. If you are having a civil ceremony then no, as it's not a religous ceremony and I presume the reason you would be having a civil is because you're not religous,

I surprised my hubbie with a ring blessing on his birthday a couple of years ago with a new wedding ring that I had bought as I had lost his. (long story). We had had a church wedding and it was a very short 5 minute ceremony, just the two of us and the priest. He blessed the ring and that was it (I did cry though, as it was in the same church we were married in and was still very emotional)

If you did want to arrange a blessing then you need to contact your local church and ask if you can have your rings blessed. They will just meet you at the church to perform the quick ceremony

Ring blessing is usually part of the full Catholic service or Cof E higher ceremony.

Some clergy will do this at the shorter versions too although it isn't obligatory.
