Is it very obvious if chicken is 'off'?

baublegirl, 16 December, 2008 at 11:43 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

I've got some chicken breasts that were use by yesterday. I don't want to throw them away if they're ok, so I've opened them and they smelt fine at first (no discernible smell). I put them on the grill, and as I was moving them there was a bit of a sort of 'eggy' smell, but nothing very strong. I have a very over sensitive nose, so it might just be me.

Do you think they'd be OK? Would you eat them? I don't usually smell chicken because i tend to eat it on the day i buy it.

I wouldnt risk it. I'm quite picky when it comes to things like this. You'll know if its off if you spend the next week shi*ting for Britain.

    Not worth it imo.

I'm sure tho they would smell quite rank

Hmm. See the reason I'm asking is that I'm not that picky - and I don't rely on dates - I usually go on look or smell. But I do know people that throw things away the second they pass the date.

I'm grilling them now, so would they smell funny when cooked?

I've made the mistake of opening off chicken before and it absolutely reeks!

I always think raw chicken smells a bit like wet dog to be honest... and would prob risk it if it's only a day later than recommended...

If it were me, I'd eat them, but I don't really tend to pay too much attention to the use by date unless its really far over. I think if chicken is off it does have a bad smell but obviously that's quite hard to describe ? Cook it for a few extra minutes to be sure.

Disclaimer: should you now get the sh1ts after eating, I take absolutely no responsibility <raises head and walks away whistling> ?

I'd eat it too, if it's just one day past it should still be ok as long as it had been stored properly.

As the others have said just make sure it's properly cooked and i'm sure you'll be fine.

Honestly, you can get the smell sometimes when chicken is well within its date and perfectly fine. So on the basis of that alone I would say they are likely to be OK.

Thanks everyone. Glad I'm not the only one who disregards dates (to a degree).

Well I grilled them for a bit longer than normal, and having smelt them again, they smell quite normal.

I decided to feed a bit to the cats first, to see how they would react ??

They've both eaten a bit, so I'm hoping they're OK.

Off chicken really stinks. ? Sometimes supermarket chicken has a funny smell as I think it sweats in the packaging but it's usually ok once it's been out for a while.
