Is It Worth the risk to Not take out Wedding Insurance?

CristaMB, 19 June, 2014 at 16:27 Posted on Planning 0 14

Hi! In the past few weeks I have become embarrassingly obssessive about saving for our future and cutting costs on the wedding where possible! It's driving my loved-ones crazy!! And I've just been told a firm 'No' at the suggestion that everyone cleans out jam jars to put flowers in! ...Maybe I am getting a little crazy here! But I'm pretty much planning everything myself and so that's what happens when I'm left to my own devices!

Now I'm wondering if we really need wedding insurance???

It's not a hugely expensive wedding! We got a great deal on the venue of £2000, the church less than £350. The venue's a well known Hall/Hotel on Powys/Shropshire border. If they caught fire or were damaged in some 'natural' way before the wedding, I'm not sure if wedding insurance would cover that anyway?

We're not getting gifts, just money, (if anyone gives us anything!). The other main expense is the photographer at £600,

And I suppose if anything out of the ordinary happened to my dress (which is still at the taylor's) or OH's hired suit or if we had an accident and couldn't attend the wedding...that would be awful. But is anything likely to happen and is it worth the extra expense??

Wedding insurance is a wise idea no matter your budget, mainly for the death clause. if a close relative (mother/father) or god forbid the bride or groom passes before the day, many people won't go through with it and stand to lose everything.

i sadly know someone to whom this happened- her mother passed suddenly two nights before the wedding and she was in far too much of a mess to go through with the day. they cancelled. without wedding insurance they'd have lost a lot of money.

no-one likes to think things will go wrong, but they can and it's safer to be covered, because no matter how small an amount you may lose out on, it just adds insult to injury

No it's not worth the risk! Some things are behond your control, like suppliers letting you down!

No, definitely not worth the risk. Insurance isn't expensive, especially compared to what you could potentially end up losing if your suppliers let you down.

If you aren't having an overly expensive wedding then the wedding insurance cost will reflect this, it should be pretty cheap so I'd say go for it. There's so much you can't control

No it is not worth the risk, it is better to be covered in the event of anything happens, and as your wedding isn't overly expensive it shouldn't cost a great deal to insure it

In my opinion it is definitely worth having. I understand wanting to save money, but you won't be saving anything if you have to pay out twice for a supplier because the first one let you down in some way (closed down, scammers etc etc.) and you don't have insurance to cover it. We got ours with John Lewis I think.

My wedding insurance cost £31 which even for a cheap wedding is still only a tiny amount. Personally i wouldn't risk it just to save such a small amount

Definitely worth it. Our wedding is very low budget and we don't have cash to spare, but I still took out insurance, for all the reasons people have outlined above.

Where insurance is concerned it really isn't worth the risk but then that's me being paranoid? its a small price to pay for peace of mind.

My friend says a couple she knew got whiplash on the way to the church and had to spend the whole day in pain...but I can't find any insurance that covers for anything less than 'Permanent Total Disablement'

(I've found an £18.49 one...and then some £25 ones (with online discounts), e.g. my wedding insurance.co.uk & have read their entire policy wording)

It was Arthur Browns, based in Leeds. They were recommended by our venue

When I got married first time round it was 1990 and the UK was in recession. My dress was paid for and being stored at the shop....and two weeks before the wedding, the shop went bust and the owners did a runner...with the entire stock including ny dress. I was lucky, my Dad worked tirelessly to track them down and got my dress back but I was one of the lucky ones as many other summer brides lost out. Wedding Insurance was practically unheard of back then but this time round I was taking no chances and paid £30 or so for peace of mind. believe me, losing your dress just before your wedding is one stress I do not want again so the insurance is worth every penny!!

Insurance is so cheap that I can't image any wedding that would not benefit.

I did a lot of research into it last year so you might find this article helpful - click here to read
