is liase a word?

Im trying to write a letter of application, but the spell checker won't let me have liase, that is how its spelled isn't it. I don't think im going mad...

    Nope, but liaise is.

    Liaise there was no word in English, so we borrowed a word from French, "Liaison" and back-formed it into a word, liaise.

    Is pre-empt right then? I want to say I would liaise with other staff in order to pre-empt potential problems...

    You have an up to date spell hecker - mine allows liase but not liaise!
