Is there a maximum a dress can be taken in??

claireac, 22 January, 2009 at 16:56 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hi,

I bought my dress in a sample sale in September and it's currently in my parents spare room. It just about fitted and just needed taking in in a couple of places.

The thing is I'm doing Slimming World and have so far lost 1st 2 1/2lbs and dropped a dress size (16 to 14). I'm planning on losing more!! Is there a limit to how much my dress can be taken in without ruining the line of i?? Mum says she'll buy me a new one if I lose that much - but for me it's very much "the dress" and I don't want a different one!

I can't believe there's a downside to losing weight!!! Will post a pic of dress - just cos it's another excuse.

Claire (who really doesn't want to worry about being too skinny for her dress!!) xx

    Hi Claire,

Congratulatiions! Both on your engagement and on losing so much weight !- have to say that I am not quite sticking to my new years resolutions and could do with some of your will power.

I don't think there is a maximum though if it has an internal corset it is really tricky and I think a dress size is about as much as most dress makers will take in. I would do some research and find a good dress maker locally and if you can allow plenty of time to get it sorted.

I know with my dress they could only take it in a little but I had mine made to measure so I was a bit naughty losing the weight with mine. Mind you, with all the stress leading up to the wedding, who needs diets!

    Good luck

    Alison

I do slimming world too and have lost 2 stone now. My dress shop has said that the dress can be taken in 3 dress sizes max. Think a dress size is from about a stone to a stone and a half. So i'm sure if you find a good seamstres they'll be able to take it in for you.

    Hi Claire,

Your dress is lovely and congrats on the weight loss. If it helps my shop said they can alter it two dress sizes down maximum, I'm trying to lose weight but made the rookie mistake of not weighing myself before I started. In a way I think the two dresses sizes alteration is a good thing because it will make me stop worrying that I could have lost more etc.

    Hope that helps!

I lost 6 stones 2lbs on Slimming World, went from a size 18 to a size 10 and had my wedding dress taken in by 14 inches. It'll be fine.

A girl I know had problems with her dress needing to be taken in. The bust was huge on her and had loads of boning. They couldn't take it in enough, so they padded the bust out instead. She was not happy! The way she described her fittings and what the alterations lady did, I kind of doubted how good they were!

From what I've heard, it seems the less structure in a dress, the more it can come in (as long as it doesn't interfere with the line of the dress of course).

    Thank you girls!

I feel a lot happier now. My dress doesn't have lots of boning or structure, but is quite shaped, so I'm sure it will be fine to go in a few sizes. I just needed some reassurance!

Nona - Slimming world is great!! I eat loads and never feel hungry. It's based on red days (as much lean meat as you want) and green days (as potatoes/pasta/rice etc as you want) with healthy extras ( cereal, dairy type things) and 5-15 syns a day for other things. It's not restrictive which is what I like. I've been going for 13 weeks now, and only had two weeks over Christmas when I gained 1 1/2lbs in total, despite eating totally off plan all the Christmas break.

Anyone that needs inspiration - very nicely ask Mel if you can see her before and after pics. They're very inspiring and she's done brilliantly!
