Is this song allowable for a registry office- in your opinion?

Umbrellacademic, 31 August, 2009 at 19:10 Posted on Planning 0 15

Hello!

Wondered if I could get some advice? Tonight We Fly by The Divine Comedy is 'our' song and OH and I hoped to have it at the end of our registry office ceremony. The original plan was to have an instrumental version but as one doesn't seem to exist we are about to bite the bullet and submit for approval. However, I am a bit scared in case we aren't allowed it, then find the instrumental version and can't use that because the registrar is alerted to the potential controversy....if that makes sense?

We are just having a meal afterwards so no opportunity to use it as a first dance or in any other way. I'm just wondering if anyone has experience of what get's allowed and not?

These are the lyrics- the copyright is probably directly with Neil Hannon and certainly not me.

Tonight we fly
Over the houses, the streets and the trees -
Over the dogs down below;
They'll bark at our shadows
As we float by on the breeze.
Tonight we fly
Over the chimney tops, skylights and slates -
Looking into all your lives
And wondering why
Happiness is so hard to find.
Over the doctor, over the soldier,
Over the farmer, over the poacher,
Over the preacher, over the gambler,
Over the teacher, over the rambler,
Over the lawyer, over the dancer,
Over the voyeur,
Over the builder and the destroyer,
Over the hills and far away!
Tonight we fly
Over the mountains, the beach and the sea
Over the friends that we've known,
And those that we now know
And those who we've yet to meet.
And when we die
Oh, will we be that disappointed or sad?
If heaven doesn't exist,
What will we have missed?
This life is the best we've ever had!

    Hi Umbrellacademic,

I really like the words of the song but I've never heard it don't know about the tune. I can't see any reason why you wouldn't be allowed it but I haven't met with my registrar yet so I'm not sure of the dos and don'ts yet.

I would be a real shame if you weren't allowed it seeing as its your song. x

I think the line 'if heaven doesn't exist' may pose a problem.

I thought that songs weren't able to contain even the slightest hint at religion. Hope I'm wrong though so you can have it! ?

I have just listened to it on You tube and it is lovely - I would call your registrar for some advice on the heaven lyrics, but failing that you can pay most string quartets to Learn a piece of music, normally thay charge about £50

I never even noticed that line, but you might be right there. I do think I've heard that it depends on the individual registrar. x

I love this song but the heaven line could cause an issue but all you can do is ask the registrar. I hope they do allow it though because it is such a fab song

Maybe silly suggestion- but is there anyway you can play part of the song without that line coming up?

    Hi

    The lyrics are really nice.

I think you will probably be ok. Our reading has the phrase "Oh God" in it....and the registrar didnt bat an eye lid...I really wouldnt stress over it. They arent as harsh as they are made out to be. Id give them a quick ring and just run it by them..then at least your mind will be at rest.

To be honest, I'd try get away with it and don't mention the lyrics unless they specifically ask for them.

When we went to meet with our registrar, they only asked for the titles of the songs, which we had to write on a form and they approved them while we were there, without checking the lyrics. One of them wasn't a well known song so it's not like they knew in advance of that meeting that it would be ok, if you know what I mean. They were far more concerned with the wording of our readings and our vows and only really gave the music the briefest of glances to check we weren't trying to use a hymn or anything!

Guess it just depends if you get lucky like us with a laid back registrar, but if it was me I wouldn;t mention it and try and sneak it in!

Thank you so much- we love this song so much but the 'Heaven' bit worried us a bit. I will contact the registrar to confirm the song titles and cross everything that they don't ask for lyrics/or are able to ignore that bit.

Will see how it goes- thanks again

I had my entrance to "Just like Heaven" by The Cure. I told the registrar it was called "Just Like you" ?

    HI ya

I'd be interested to know the answer to this. I would say no, purely for the reason you have divine in the title which could be taken as religious and you are definately not allowed to mention heaven, so let's hope they don't realise. Fingers crossed.

Well, I've just had the Jeff Buckley version of hallelujah denied by my registrar today! She phoned to say that even though that was the only religious word in it (and by religious she meant that the word's original meaning is 'praise god'), and even though it was an instrumental version, and even though my best friend was playing it as a gift for my processional I'm not allowed it. When my H2B and I first met, we played JB version of this song over and over on our crappy stereo in Romania where we were volunteering until late into the night. I'm absolutely gutted. If heaven is in the title, my registrar certainly wouldn't allow it. What answer were you given?

Just logged on to my email....and the answer is YES! I think we were okay becuase although the band are The Divine Comedy, the song title is fairly mainstream. I am really pleased.

Hallelujah is my joint favourite song- I'm so sorry fvj199, I think I read somewhere that different registrars have different interpretations, and I've been lucky, but I am gutted for you.

I'm a registrar and would have absolutely no problem with your song. It obviously wasn't written nor intended as a religious piece of music or worshipful in any way and as far as I'm concerned that is what defines 'religious' music/songs.

i do know, however, that some registrars/registration districts can be very pedantic and if they refuse the piece there probably isn't much you can do about it.

Hello please does anyone have any opinion on whether la ritournelle would be allowed? Lyrics below

Oh, nothing's gonna change my love for you
I wanna spend my life with you
So we'll make love on the grass under the moon
No one can tell, damned if I do

    Forever journeys on golden avenues
I drift in your eyes since I love you
I got that beat in my veins for only rule
Love is to share, mine is for you
