Is writing in red still seen as rude?

RuthG, 9 November, 2008 at 19:39 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 22

I've been writing my christmas cards this afternoon (I need to be prepared, we could be moving house right before christmas ?) and I've been writing in red ink (not biro) but H just mentioned that it's rude - even in christmas cards??

It wouldn't bother me. The only time I don't like red pen is when I've submitted something to a senior at work to check and it's returned with red pen amendments. That smacks too much of school for my liking and I instantly feel 12 years old again. ?

I think some may consider it rude but TBH if I received a xmas card with red writing I'm not sure I'd think twice about it.

Depends entirely on the context. A professional letter in red would look more than a little weird (and if it was in green ink I'd assume it was from a nutter), but I absolutely wouldn't give too hoots about what colour(s) a Christmas card message was written in.

Why would they be a nutter for writing in green? Just curious!

I don't think its rude, red is my favourite colour!!

Oh and red would remind people of Christmas as its a common Christmas colour.

I think I have an inbuilt aversion to writing in red ink, as I worked in a hospital for many years, and we weren't allowed to use red ink , because the surgeons always wrote up their operation notes in red !

Oh dear. I sometimes use green ink to annotate documents at work, if only to make it stand out more than black or blue. If it's all the same to you though, I think I shall categorise myself as an 'eccentric' or a 'self-aggrandising pedant', rather than a nutter. Others may disagree. ?

Ooops! I often mark my students' work in green. I hope they think I am just eccentric and not bat$hit crazy!

My PhD supervisor used to mark everything in red pen, there was nothing so disheartening as getting big chunks of my thesis back covered in his red scrawl (mainly because we have different writing styles). It used to drive me nuts.

Christmas card is a completely different thing though.

I always edit in red (I can't edit on screen, I have to do it on paper). It's so much easier to see. I've never thought of it as rude ?

Traditionally it implies debt or a threat, and in some cultures it associated with bad luck. Those of us who've had our school work marked in red probably associate it with criticism. (I rarely mark in red ink, I use green or pencil as do the rest of my department.) Personally, I'd avoid red ink.

No! Red is Christmassy and most people won't give a hoot.

Sorry, no, I didn't mean that. I wouldn't write cards in red because I'd be worried about offending people. You know your people best - if any are particularly old fashioned you might want to rewrite, but most people (myself included, despite the fact that i wouldn't write in red) won't bat an eyelid, I'm sure.

in my old job i once tidied out a stationery cupboard and found a load of red pens. we probably used about 2 a year (for the debit colum in the ledger) so i asked my newly qualified teacher friend if she wanted them. she said her school didn't allow marking in red as it was seen as negative and over critical, and was demoralising to the students

i must admit i never twigged that when i was at school, i thought the red was just to make the corrections stand out

Aha the green ink brigade. For me green ink = pharmacist as they always write up hospital prescription cards in green ink. It used to really piss them off if you wrote up the card in green ink as they couldn't tell where they'd been. (Of course, I never did this deliberately, course not)

WSS. I actually prefer if someone edits my documents in red or green. Black is difficult to make out and red just stands out better than blue.

I wouldn't think twice about a Christmas card written in red.

Like others have said here, when proofreading I mark corrections in red as they stand out better.

    For a Christmas card I wouldn't worry, it's a Christmassy colour!

Years ago I was given a beautiful fountain pen with red ink cartridges, but was terrified to use it for fear of being thought rude. The barrel was transparent in places, and it didn't look the same with black cartridges in it Smiley sad

Even if it was written in the blood of your loved ones? I very much doubt it.
