Itchy scalp driving me mad - anything I can use to help?

Smiley, 16 September, 2008 at 20:12 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 21

I am in danger of scratching my scalp to bits. I got wet today and it is now so itchy it is driving me to distraction.

Does anyone know of anything that I may have in the house that may ease the itching? I mean vinegar, wine, cheese, anything from teh store cupboard, cooking essentials, anything ! I all, I am will to slap anything on my scalp if it stops this itching ! ?

I wish I had picked up some polytar today when I was out. ?

Try a thin layer of hydrocortisone cream or even E45

I have had a itchy scalp problem for 10+ years and have tried everything, 6 months ago on the recommendation of my doctor I started using Philip Kingsley; Flaky Itchy Scalp Shampoo (@£17 a bottle but lasts over 6 months, I got it from amazon!) and things have improved 100%. If I stop using it, the itching starts. HTH xx

I dont have any in the house, I think I am going to go insane !!

I feel i have tried everything, Aveda, the lot. I did get a topical lotion from my doctor, but typically I have run out. Will need to go and get more. I may give that shampoo a try though.

It really drives you insane doesnt it? I keep asking my hairdresser to look, he says he cant see anything, yet my tops are covered when I have an itching spree. The doc was most sympathetic (not). He made me scratch, the found a flake, and said, I jsut need to check it isnt lice ?

Amazon you say ... will go have a look

When mine is really itchy, washing my hair or wetting my scalp usually calms it down a bit. Lush have a bar thing called snake oil thats quite good, you melt it with your fingers and massage into your scalp about 15 mins before you wash your hair, it sorts out things like dandruff etc and helps with itchiness I find.

I get madly itchy and use Oilatum shampoo now. I cannot, however, use any other kind of product on my hair on any kind of regular basis, or it will itch like hell. Sometimes I use a straightening balm thing, to stop my hair getting wrecked by straighteners but mostly I use nothing

Lp, it isnt dry. Well, it wasnt until I started scratching the top layer of skin off ?

I have found some of the Cocois (coconut oil compound) I got from the doctor, so applying that.

I just cant go on like this anymore. My knees and elbows are the same. Drives me mad!

I've tried that snake bar and can't get it to melt at all! I must have really cold hands - even in the shower. It's been sitting in my shower for ages now.

I can't seem to get rid of the itch either, although I do find that as La Psycho says using warm oil helps.

Have you tried solving it through diet? ie by cutting out wheat?

You know, that is funny you should say that. I have a wheat intolerance, but have been bad lately eating wheat more and more.

Could that have an effect on my scalp as well as causing me bowel pains/etc?

I didnt even link them !

Hi. I really do recommend that shampoo.

I have spent a fortune at a trigologists (hair/scalp expert) and it did nothing except hurt my bank balance.

Stress can increase the itching too.

Hope you get this sorted, I so know how you are feeling. xx

I hope it works for you.

You do not need too much as it lathers up really well, I wash my hair with warm water (avoid it getting too hot as that I feel was adding to the itch)

I once bought loads of cheap bottled water and used it to wash my hair as I believed I was reacting to the water from the taps... After a week of bottles warming in my bath, I realised it did not help or stop the itching?

    Good Luck x

It has got really bad this week, only since we got home. We were on holiday in Blackpool last week, and my scalp was great, as was my hair. However, we got back to Glasgow, and the first time I washed my hair it went mental, sticking out everywhere, too soft, then the itching started again.

Maybe I should move further south and solve my problem. ? Or can you get tablets to make water hard? It is weird though, I would have thought it would be the other way.

I cant wait for it to come through though .. 48 hour delivery, roll on Friday/Saturday ?

Have you tried the anti-itch one from the wella sunsilk range?

After spending over 100 quid on prescriptions from the docs, I discovered this.....and it was amazing no itching, no flakes, smells lovely and is always on roll back in asda so only costs about a quid

My scalp, arms etc used to be a nightmare till I discovered this.

I am sure I used this years ago, but I will try and pick some up then next time I am shopping.

It was a lot better today having used my coconut thing, although I got no sleep at all last night as the smell of it made me feel sick ?

I get flare ups of seborrheic dermatitis, I use the neutrogena stuff especially for it and after a couple of washes with that it clears right up. I buy it when it's on 3 for 2 in Boots.

    ?

I would recommend sticking to one shampoo for at least a week, also use no conditioner during this time as that can agittate the scalp.

    Hope your shampoo works.

There was a rememdy in something I read (although it may have been dandruff rather than itching) using Aspirin - dissolve it in warm water, spray onto head, leave for 15 mins and wash.

Muffins, I got my Philip Kinglsey shampoo through today, cant wait till tomorrow morning to use it. If it werent for the fact the bathroom is next to the (sleeping) babies room I would be trying it out right now ?

Baby Buns, you know, that sounds nice. Although, I am picturing fizzy asprin in freezing cold water, spraying it on and the fizz helping the itch. ?.

Well, if you were a dog I would be putting you on a gluten free diet as wheat sensitivities can cause both stomach problems and itching, so in light of what you have put I would think it is worth looking into

    ? I have been called a dog a few times ?

I am going to try and cut out the wheat. It is really difficult, but I know I will feel better, will end up losing over a stone in 2 months (happened last time). I cant remember what my scalp was like last time, or my numerous rashes, maybe they had gone which is why I wasnt bothered by it.

Thank you. I have bought some Spelt flour in the hope it is ok.
