It's a bit chilly! What cardigan / shawl / coverup would go with my dress **FLASH**

raindrop_eye, 24 September, 2012 at 11:29 Posted on Planning 0 11

Morning all! I get married in less than 3 weeks, and today's horrible weather has got me thinking about how to keep me and my bridesmaids warm.

This is a pic of me in the sample of my dress (it's a size smaller than my dress is). The dress is much 'white-r' in real life. The wedding is a mixture of elegant and rustic - lots of natural colours, wood, glass and lace. Colour scheme is a fairly springlike green (sometimes called willow green) with accents in autumn colours.

I like the idea of a cropped cotton cardigan in a red/purple autumn colour similar to the ones in the top right picture here

- but have not had much look finding one and am not sure if it wouldn't be elegant enough for the dress. I'd love to hear any ideas you have.

I think you would be fine with a nice shrug or cardi- chances are you wont have it on that much anyway and the lace on your dress (gorgeous btw) I think will work with colour and textured cardi if that makes sense!

Personally i would not wear a cardi on my wedding day - think they look silly against a beautiful dress *runs away and hides* how much time will you actually be spending outside? Photos last an hour or so and do you really want to look back and see yourself wearing a cardi?? My wedding day was in May and it was bloody freezing but i didnt feel it one bit, i was just so happy that i didnt care. People kept commenting on how cold my skin was but i truely didnt feel it (and im a very cold person) - how about these?

Thanks for your advice. The ceremony is in a different place to the reception so will be spending quite a lot of the day outside travelling around. Thought I'd take the cardigan off for main photographs, but I'll be able to cope better with the cold for those photos if I can cover up before and after. Have seen some lovely photos of brides wearing cardigans - but with none with lace dresses, so thanks for posting those photos Kjay.

My pleasure- I have a lace dress too- love em!

It is personal preference at the end of the day- I am not so keen on the more formal jacket type cover ups as I just don't think that they suit me.

Plus if you buy one and don't use it at lest you will still have a lovely cardi ?

I have a lace dress and have decided to go for this lovely little jacket/bolero type thing from a shop on eBay:

I think (in fact I KNOW!) it's a struggle to get a shrug or shawl or anything that'll go nicely with an asymetic/one shouldered dress. I'm having a "borrowed" feather shrug but it'll purely be for warmth on my shouders and it won't be photographed.

Had a panic in late June (cold snap) and went for 3 silver pashminas (me + adult bridesmaids) from Amazon. Really nice and £17.99 - didn't need it on the day, but wear it a lot and love it because it is a "wedding" thing I can wear often!

The problem with those little shrug tops & even some cardigans, is that the breast area/neck area is exposed & still gets cold. A pashmina can be drapped over the shoulders for pics then put around the neck & cover the exposed chest area between pics & when its cold.

I'd go for a pashmina with say gold or silver fringing or a beaded fringing in a colour similar to your dress. Even a velvet one if you could find it. These arent exactly what I'm thinking, but similar.

Thanks for all your tips! Nadgerly, those pictures are gorgeous! I've ordered a purple shrug and a short, ivory cardigan but won't be able to try them with the dress until a few days before the wedding. Should be able to return whichever I don't use.
