Judy Blume

Panjita, 30 of October of 2013 at 11:09 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 31

Does anyone know if there is a modern day equivalent to Judy Blume? In other words a writer for pre-teen/early teen girls that focuses on growing up, puberty, periods etc? I loved Judy Blume when I was a kid, but the books were slightly dated even then (I remember talk of sanitary belts?!?!!?).

Thanks.

I vaguely remember reading the books from the Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging series in my early teens. Author is Louise Rennison. Can’t remember if there’s much about periods. Lots about growing up/love etc.

Never saw the film version of the one book so no idea if it portrayed it well.

I like the film and agree that the books are fun. I gave a set to my stepdaughter when she was about 13 and she really enjoyed them.

As an aside, I met Louise Rennison and she was absolutely lovely.

Yes the angus books are hilarious!

Not sure about Jacqueline Wilson? she writes for that age group but not sure they are particularly about puberty and stuff

Yes, me too. I remember there being a distinct overuse of the word "sheath".

Phillippa Gregory has written some new historical stuff for that age group I think? Not read it, no idea what it's like but might be interesting.

I bought an online course on Writing for Children. It's only a Groupon thing and I am surprised it is even getting my attention, but I am really getting into it. I am just thinking about genres at the moment and wondered if that genre is covered by anyone currently as it was Judy Blume that really got me into reading post Roald Dahl.

And me! Also remember our teacher finding it and confiscating it, then having the library remove all of Judy Bloom's other books.

What was it his 'sheath' was called? Murph or something like that?

I loved Judy Blume. I remember my mum wouldn't let me read one as on the blurb on the back it said some teenage girl had started taking off her top by her open window....

My sister had this sort of judy blume diary where you could record boys you fancied, how big your boobs were (I forget the details) and I was so, so, so jealous of it.

Hahahahaha yes Ralph!!! Ah fond memories of finding places to hide it so my mum didn't find it! My friends and I ended up hiding it up a tree at some point because the school sent a letter home to the whole year asking the parents to hunt for copies we might have and bin them.

Anyway back to the original question, I don't know if there is anything similar now? I guess kids find out everything they need to know on the internet :-/

No, but it beggars the question, why did she want to put aftershave on his winkie?

Do you want me to get my copy and then quote the clean bits to you?
