Just William books

RubyBlue, 22 November, 2008 at 17:06 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

I'm just browsing the Book People for books for the children in my class. I can't remember reading these as a child and they are recommended for children aged 9-12. My class are aged 7-8...are the books too advanced/old-fashioned for them do you think?

Thanks x

That's a coincidence - there was a piece in today's Guardian that absolutely nails their appeal - and makes it absolutely clear that children's books with sophisticated vocabularies are a good thing.

Thanks Mr JK, that was interesting. I'm all for stretching children with language and vocabulary, and as they seem to adore books and reading (in the main), I may go for these. Popping to the shops tomorrow so I will flick through one to get a better idea.

I think I was around 7 or 8 when I read Just William (Ihave never read the subsequent ones). I was a fairly advanced reader (the school ran out of books for me ?), but I'm sure it'll be a great addition to your classroom. I don't remember there being 'general' books like this when I was in Primary School, just the 'level' type reading books. It was a long time ago though, so I may not be remembering correctly ?

(Oh, and for £5 on the Bookpeople, it's a bargain. Just read them yourself if the kids don't ?)

I loved Just William when I was younger(and still wouldn't object to reading/listening to it now), we didn't have the books we had the tapes for long trips up to Scotland to see my Grandmother.

I've never read Just William but have bought an Amelia Jane box set for my (just about to turn) 8 years old goddaughter. I'm looking forward to her reaction!

I had them bought for me last Christmas (from the Book People) and I loved them - I'd never read them before! I think they will be fine.

Thanks everyone...I'm actually going to buy them a book each as a Christmas present. I may buy these for the stronger readers and Horrid Henry for the slightly less able ones.
