Kids with food around their mouth

poochanna, 19 September, 2008 at 13:03 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

What is this latest trend for showing pictures of kids with food smeared all around their mouth on advertising? It was on the restuarant last night, with the service stations advertising free child meals and the girl is eating pasta and has it smeared all over her. It's grim and actually makes me feel slightly sick.

There's also a picture of a child eating cake on our scanner box and again it's smeared all over his face and his mouth is open in a big grin, showing the chewed up contents.

Does this really appeal to parents?

Doesn't appeal to me tbh. I hate messy eaters - i try very hard to instill decent table manners with my horrors.....

I hate it - my Mum has an obsession with clean faces and its passed on to me!

Particularly nasty when close friends insist their children kiss you goodbye with snotty noses and dirty faces.

Glad it's not just me! Advertisers must think parents find it cute though

    Ewwww, snotty faces, even worse.

It's compltetly disgusting. I looked after my 18 month old nephew at the weekend and spent a huge amount of the time wiping with a baby wipe as i just can't bear food around their mouths. How hard is it for a parent to wipe?!

I got Ideal Home magazine at the weekend too and there's a pull out in it about wallpaper. You can print one of your own images onto wallpaper now. One of the examples they had was of two kids eating (with food on faces!) which someone had had printed and hung in their dining room. Yuck!!

I think you answer your own question - it's not hard but you do have to do it so often that after a while you just no longer notice in quite the same way!

I can't say I find it appealing, but I have to confess that come a certain point in the day, assuming we're not out somewhere posh, I give up on cleanliness and constant wiping with the attitude that the dirt will shortly be washed off in the bath!?

I usually carry wipes around for Emily's face/hands when we're out but sometimes you can't hep missing a bit. Kieran is just a grubby boy, prone to foraging in the bushes and then wiping his dirt-covered hands across his nose/face ?. At the age of 10 though it's not so easy to accost him with a wipe/flannel. I can pass him a wipe but he usually gives his face a cursory wipe and then runs off into the dirt again!? I do at least try to make sure that he starts the day off clean, and has a wash if we're going out somewhere, but what happend between then and going in the shower at night-time is another matter - I think I've given up and tend not to notice it as much these days!

Another irritating food/child advert...the KFC one.

child bouncing on the bed, mum calls 'have you tidied your room yet' child shouts 'nnnooooo!!!!'

voiceover 'at least they'll clear their plate with blah blah blah'

surely if the disobedient little brat hasn't done her chores, it's no to a takeaway meal?

I must admit that my baby is always absolutely covered in food at the end of a meal- she's very messy and I'd far rather let her get stuck in and enjoy trying things than constantly faff around with wipes.

I don't find the sight of her covered in food particularly sweet though- I'd far rather cuddle a clean baby than one covered in pasta sauce- and I certainly don't find it an appealing look on other people's children. I have no idea why advertisers use such pictures, except perhaps as a sort of shorthand to make clear that the child is happy because he's eating, rather than because he's just won the lottery or something.

    I agree with Knownowt.

On a slight tangent, apparently more children have eating disorders these days because their parents are over obsessed with cleanliness and don't allow them to enjoy the full sensory experience of their food.

I don't think it's cute or desirable, either.

I can see why it would happen in real life and it doesn't really bother me seeing children eating and getting messy. I just can't see how it would be attractive for advertising and it's becoming more common, which disturbs me ?

Also, it's hard to get your kids to eat nicely when they're surrounded by images of children with poor table manners - and anything goes and school / nursery ... grr...

I don't mind seeing mine covered in food - like KN, I'd sooner see him wearing yogurt and knowing he was doing what he had to developmentally to get used to a range of food. I don't find it appealing though, and it's grim on other people's children.

Snotty noses and toddlers kind of go together, but I draw the line at snotty kisses. Bleurgh.

Don't see the point of it on adverts/tv but my children are always messy at mealtimes and i clean them up at the end of the meal

as for snot - my 2 are currently really really snotty with colds and if i were to wipe them every time snot came out i'd literally be doing it all day long and they'd have really sore noses!!
