Kitchen Worktop Connecting Strips (Dull)

Emmark, 18 November, 2008 at 09:32 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

Sorry for the dull post... I am having a new kitchen delivered in December, it's one from Ikea so we will be installing it ourselves.

We have received quotes from joiners for fitting the worktop for us without the joining strips but they have quoted alot more than what we expected.

Does anybody know where I can get colour matching worktop joining strips from? The only ones Ikea sell are in aluminuim and won't go with the dark walnut worktop we have brought.

Again Ive tried looking on the internet but all thats bringing up is the aluminuim ones.

Many Thanks for your help!!

How competent/confident a DIYer are you? It's possible to fit worktops without the connector strip yourself. You'll need a router and a worktop jig. You can pick up them up for about £50ish on Ebay. The problem is you only get one go at it and it can go wrong.

My husband is a kitchen fitter and the but and scribes are a tricky part of the kitchen and so easily go wrong. He charges about £40 to do it so you may find someone in your area who can do it at a reasonable rate.

Ive looked on B&Q's website and they have got them but they take up to 6 weeks for delivery and I need them in 3 weeks.

Mwnci - to be honest I don't trust ourselves to do a decent job of routering it ourselves. I may just have to cough up the money and get someone to do it.

    Many Thanks both

Does he charge that amount to fit it with the joining strips or to router it? As Ive been quoted £125-£180 to properly fit it but routering it.

I live in Leicestershire if anyone knows of anybody?

    Thanks

That's what we did, although we bought our worktop from a local specialist, and took our own measurements and got them to cut it for us. Then use juse use waterproof glue and clamp it together until dry.

Try looking for a local worktop firm, they'd have the connectors, and probably a better range than B&Q.

Also is your whole kitchen from ikea, as well as the worktop? You know that Ikea cabinets don't have gaps in the back for pipework etc? This gives you more cupboard space but either means a) your joiners will have to cut bits out for the piperuns or b) batton the cupboards out from the wall an extra 5cm. If you're doing b), remember you'll need to get a wider worktop to allow for this.

That reminds me of the other thing I was going to say. If you're getting a worktop from Ikea they may be slightly wider than one from elsewhere, from memory they're 620mm whereas a B&Q one is 600mm wide so it's possible that the connector strips may be too small. You can order Ikea worktops custom-made to size - would that be an option?
