Left cooked ham out of the fridge over night - would you eat it?

Janna, 28 April, 2009 at 08:23 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

It's sliced cooked ham that's been out for about 15 hours. Using it would mean giving it my 2 and 4 year old children. I've got to chuck it haven't I? ☹️

I would eat it without a second thought. In fact, we did just this (only with unsliced ham) last week and we all ate it with no ill effects. I'm also happy to keep ham in a cool room/larder, tbh, although I'd only do that with unsliced. Not sure whether that actually makes a difference though- someone like Hazel would know.

Yes, new sealed packet. Got it delivered, but left it out. It would have cool as the heating wasn't on. Hooray! Thank you.

I'd eat it as well no probs. Maybe different if it had been lying in a very warm place, or directly in the sun all that time, but I'd say you'd be grand. Just think WWH/ZD?

Then it will be absolutely fine.

I'm sure you don't need telling, but curing (salting) ham was used for centuries to preserve the meat before the advent of refrigeration.

Although once it's sliced you lose a lot of the preservative effect

Well I did know that bit, but my stupidity is exposed at the point where I needed to decide whether 'cooked' ham had been cured or whether it's just, well, been cooked ?

I'm the one who left the cooked ham out for 24 hours. It's been about an hour now and not sick yet. I ate a small slice but then got worried and didn't eat any more. It was in a sealed plastic container. Will that make me sick?
