Legal stuff, please help!

Natalie, 6 February, 2023 at 22:55 Posted on Planning 0 2
Hi!

Myself and my partner are booking our wedding in the Lake District. He is from Birmingham, I am from edinburgh. But we both live in Scotland with our 4 month old baby.
I am totally confused at what legal stuff we need to do prior… has anyone done this before that could give me some advice? It mentions we need to stay in England 9 days before the wedding, surely not?!
Thank you in advance xx

There are some posts from the last year that ask this as well, search for Scotland on the forums. Basically you have to give notice in England and to do that you need to stay in the country for 9 days before but that can be at a friend's house or a hotel. So it's not 9 days before your ceremony but 9 days before your give notice appointment.

Getting married in England, but living in Scotland, can be a bit complicated, but it's not uncommon for couples to have different residency requirements for their wedding. Here's some general information that may help:

    1. Residency requirement: In England, you are required to give notice of your intention to marry at least 28 days before the wedding, and you must both have lived in England for at least 7 clear days prior to giving notice. This means that you may need to stay in England for at least 9 days before the wedding, as stated in the information you received.

    2. Documentation: You will also need to provide proof of your identity, nationality, and immigration status, as well as proof of your address and any previous marriages or divorces.

    3. Marriage license: You will need to obtain a marriage license from the local registry office, which will allow you to get married in a particular venue.

    4. Wedding venue: You will need to choose a wedding venue that is authorized to perform marriages. Some venues may require that you book well in advance, so it's important to start planning as soon as possible.

I recommend checking with the local registry office or the venue where you plan to get married to confirm the specific requirements for your situation. They should be able to provide you with more detailed information and help guide you through the process. Good luck with your wedding planning!
