London venue Help

zaria123, 27 August, 2013 at 19:31 Posted on Planning 0 24

Dear All

Just new to the forum, we are looking for a venue in London, although very specific in style. please send me ideas!!

We aim t make the day very unlike a traditional wedding, and want it to be a fun celebration day free for ourselves and close friends and family. At the maximum there will be 54-60 people including a few children. We want the venue space to be intimate rather than a huge venue feeling very empty with that small a party.

There are a few venues we have looked at (bearing in mind it is very untraditional, and we don;t want a hotel).

The look we are going for would be lavish and opulent early 20th Century, meets Great Gatsby verging on shabby chic elegant type of thing. Below are a few photos to give an idea. We were looking at anything Private Dining Restaurants and Gastro Pubs to exclusive use. It would be easier for us if the venue also provided food but not essential. We would prefer a place where there was a minimum spend rather than a venue hire fee, followed by food, etc. The venue would need to allow us to provide our own entertainers too. And we would rather have wonderful food than fancy nouvelle cuisine.

If anyone knows these places the photos below belong to them to give an idea of style. Beach Blanket Babylon in Notting Hill - The Ballroom, The First Floor in Portobello, and Paradise by way of Kensal Green.

I have no idea on costs or terms but Locale in Blackheath is lovely and hires our exclusively for weddings. It's a restaurant. Obviously not licensed for the actual ceremony, are you planning to have that elsewhere?

    Hi

Yes the ceremony will be at a church, we are looking for the reception venue from 5.30pm to 1am

We are aiming for Saturday 27th September 2014, the other issue which arises is a lot of places don;t offer a friday or saturday night for exclusive use.

I'll have a look at Locale and see what it shapes up like, thankyou so much for that.

Plenty more suggestions appreciated too. Because we live in Northern Ireland we cant just pop down for the day to see these places, so we are trying our best to do internet research but that has a lot of limitations, usually word of mouth unveils secret gems

Where is the church? It might be worth looking at places in the city, as they often close at the weekends, and so you could get exclusive use.

One place that has been mentioned in the past is Knight's Templar on Chancery Lane - it is actually a Wetherspoons but is nice.

Another place that I have looked at with work is the Century Club on Shaftesbury Ave

The Church is in the Hampstead area, but we are transporting all our guests on an old double decker bus to include a picnic and a sightseeing tour, so the location of the reception can literally be anywhere around london, I'd probably be looking for something more quirky and unique in style, having looked at the two pubs you suggested, but thankyou for the suggestion as Ive been searching for days online and didnt even unearth those two which proves that there are still plenty of option out there I havent yet discovered!

Is there any reason you don't want a hotel? There is lots of hotels in London that fit that style (although you would need quite a generous budget)

Take a look at Winchester House in Putney. It may not be the exact style you are after but it ticks lots of the other boxesfor you.... exclusive hire, available til 1am, good caterers and lots of flexibility.

Basically we want to avoid any type of conventional style wedding (we aren't doing a best man for example, we don;t want typical table layouts, or chair cover, flowers, bows, nothing white or cream, and nothing colour coded, we want it to be a celebration day, easy and relaxed. No mayyer how much a Hotel tries we think it still is slightly generic, rather than very unique and personal to our style and taste) . It is very difficult to get most hotels to change their mind set about how a typical wedding should look, and to be honest we just want something much more intimate and out of the ordinary.

We would even look at old crypts, or old churches, town houses etc.

Also we;d look at unique or strange venues where wedding receptions have never been held before.

Definitely would have to to more quirky and unique with great atmosphere, and charm, a lot of the old grand building still feel very generic, as if they have been styled and decorated for the general expectations of how a wedding venue should be.

Without being a d*ck about this....

A hotel room can reflect your personal style as much as a 'quirky' restaurant. Neither has to be generic, but nor would either necessary avoid the charge of 'generic'. It could be argued that getting married in a 'quirky' restaurant is simply using said restaurant to do the styling for you, in the same way that getting married in a hotel is using the hotel to do the styling. How is either being 'unique'?

And I'm not sure that your inspiration pics are really so far 'out there' that you'd struggle to find somewhere?

And finally, I'll pay you a LOT of money if Gatsby isn't the most frequently quoted wedding style for this/next year.

Woah cool theme, I don't know if it'd be big enough but I've shot in House of Wolf in North London, it has several rooms, one of them is a vintage apothecary bar, there's a restaurant upstairs which could house the actual reception dinner, I think the rest might be too small. It also has a tiny fainting room which is hidden behind a bookshelf which is cool.

You know what, for a minute I'd forgotten that I'd written a blog post a couple of months ago with suggestions for quirky venues in London, I think the Asylum might appeal to you:

I think you will be surprised by hotels in London I don't think I viewed one hotel that does standard packages. But as with most things in London you will need a generous budget.

Thankyou folks for all the information.

To Marianne, the House of Wolf is wonderful! On their web site it doesn't look like their rooms are big enough but we are definitely going to contact them tomorrow to ask about options and if any of the rooms are adjoining (and they seem to have a 4am license). We really loved the Asylum but unfortunately found they don't allow events to run past 9.30pm.

We have even looked at Volupte, but they don't offer private hire on saturdays, To Funky, thanks for the info on the Proud cabaret, we hadn't found that before.

As I say we are just looking for something unusual, certainly the the wedding wont have a theme as such, and yes perhaps we are looking for a place already has its own unique look, which doesn't need styled by us, simply because logistically we are in Northern Ireland means it is slightly more difficult to manage and keep in check. We aren't looking for a Gatsby wedding, that was just used loosely to try and describe the photos I had attached. The wedding isn't going to follow convention or a traditional format, and will be very informal and relaxed.

I'm still not swayed towards a Hotel, and its just a personal choice, and not budget related.

We rally appreciate the efforts of ideas, keep them coming if you can think of any more!

I used to do a few corporates her...and it is excellent:

    https://nlc.org.uk/weddings.htm

Another is bugging me although would fit your requirement although sadly the name escapes me at the moment.....It is an old church turned in to a restaurant/wedding reception venue...It was in the Knightsbridge area......

    welcome to the forum btw

Edited to add that the place I was mentioning was Mossimans in Belgravia. On the website it says that you need to be a member, although I definitely photographed an excellent wedding there(Ceremony was at the Brompton Oratory), so it might well be an option still....

Searching for the perfect place is great fun - especially in Lindon where there are so many quirky and cool places to choose from. I always quite liked the look of London's only lighthouse which can be hired for weddings: http://www.trinitybuoywharf.com/event-space/occasion/weddings

    How about somewhere like this:

    http://www.landmarkartscentre.org/about-hiring/wedding-receptions.html

Its a converted church in Teddington but basically dry hire so you could do what you want with it on the day.

One of my relatives is getting married here otherwise it would definitely be on my list Smiley smile

My first post (I'll get around to a planning thread soon), but having looked into a few events spaces for work, I thought I might be able to help with some suggestions.

The HAC nr Liverpool Street - Tucked away among the skyscapers in the City of London, this venue feels surprisingly secluded (due to large grounds and lawn). Check out the Long Room.

The Brewery nr Barbican - It wouldn't be exclusive hire as they have several rooms available for hire; the venue has a nice classic feel to it.

Skyloft nr Pimlico - It doesn't look special from the outside, but inside it is a more modern loft space with amazing views over London.

    Good luck with your search!

Don't know if this is the kind of thing you're looking for, but it's exclusive hire and down near the Tate Britain:

What about the Cutty Sark in Greenwich? They have all different areas of the ship that can be hired - there is a really cool room called the Masters saloon or something like that, it would fit with your quirky Gatsby theme and well, it's the Cutty Sark!

    Hi All

And firstly I;d like to thank everyone for your information to date.

Unfortunately I have only started to read through some if it as I had a very close family member who passed away very suddenly, and that took over importance.

I'd now have a detailed look at all your suggestions, but again if anyone has any more I'd be delighted to hear

    ?
