Looking for alternative wedding dresses - please help!

Starshine, 29 August, 2016 at 08:43 Posted on Planning 0 7

Morning everyone, hope you're enjoying the Bank Holiday Smiley smile

I've recently started looking at wedding dresses (very exciting!) and I'm having trouble finding anything I like. None of the bridal shops or online suppliers I've seen seem to have anything unusual, alternative or quirky, which is what I'm looking for - almost everything is just plain white or a shade thereof, a regular skirt and a regular dress top, maybe with some little silver or gold accents at the most. I've asked around and when I ask for unusual/alternative most people seem to point me towards vintage or retro dresses ... which I feel are basically the same thing except they look a little bit more like they're from the 50's! So not looking for that.

So what am I looking for then? Well, while I do want the primary colour to be some shade of white, I would quite like it to have more colours involved somewhere (like an underskirt/different coloured layers/patterned parts of the material, maybe). I'd love for it to look REALLY alternative, like a dress you could wear to a rock concert, or a dress you could wear in a fantasy movie, or ... just something very different, really. We're having a very laid back wedding with a pizza truck and a bouncy castle etc., no sit down dinner, so I probably need to be able to move easily in the dress.

I don't know whether any of you have maybe looked at some kind of alternative dresses? Does anyone have any leads on where to look?

Thanks in advance Smiley smile

Hi Starshine, your wedding sounds awesome!

My friend told me about Fairy Gothmother (www.fairygothmother.co.uk) who do some beautiful dresses. There are a lot of tea-length but also some alternative gowns, such as their Revanche de la Femme or Phoenix collection. Might be worth popping in and seeing them as they probably have plenty more tricks up their sleeve.

    Best of luck!

There's loads of options, but you probably need to look under different search terms rather than "wedding". Examples that immediately spring to mind are:

    https://www.fairygothmother.co.uk/collections/evening-wear-1

    https://www.the-couture-company.co.uk/

    http://www.faeriebrides.com/

If you're after something you could wear to a rock concert, then you're probably better off specifically looking for those sorts of outfits.

The Offbeat Bride website has loads of ideas as well. Maybe you could pull your own ideas or inspiration board together and get a dressmaker to make you something from scratch?

It's massively budget dependent as well, I've bought a really simple plain dress and am going to alter it myself adding embellishments and some dye, if you aren't a sewing type of person there are seamstresses that will take on adding extra embellishments for you. Failing that you could go bespoke there are lots of seamstresses /dress makers at wedding fayres. I don't know where you're based but there is a shop in Thorne Yorkshire called perfect day that sells exclusively Victoria Kay dresses and will ask the designer to alter colours for you, they're on Facebook as Perfect Day Promotions. If you want really really different, there's Royal Black Couture Corsetry, however she's expensive and booked up for the first half of 2017.

    Good luck in your search.

This was my dream dress - unfortunately it was over my budget:

I did find that there was similar stuff on Etsy as well that was a bit different from the norm - if you can get over the whole ordering a dress online thing without trying it on beforehand.

MY friend got her dress from the Couture Company (someone already posted the link above) and it was lovely. It was lilac underneath with white lace/tulle over the top and looked very fairyish.

What is your budget like as you could possibly get a dressmaker to make you one? I'd been looking at getting a dress maker to make me a dress similar to Princess Annes dress (I luuurved the dagged sleeves). I couldn't in the end as I figured it'd be too hot for a June wedding!

Although I was 100% going to get an alternative dress and ended up getting a 'regular' wedding dress after going to a bridal fair and falling in love with one (and the discount on it!). It also meant I could see a *lot* of dresses very quickly and find something that was bridally but also still quirky.

Not really sure what type of dress your after but you can add bright pettycoats under tea length dresses and put a sash round the waist for a pop of colour? Team it with converse and you ditch the traditional look?

    Or or go bespoke http://www.the-couture-company.co.uk/about/

Well I'm not 100% sure they follow the brief but I have bought an Ian Stuart dress that is a little alternative. I went for practan as I wanted to be a "princess" for once in my life but as I usual exist in skinny ripped jeans and converse/vans it didn't really feel right. Ian Stuart's dresses felt more me - wedding like but with enough of a different edge to feel like me. They do come in colour though mine is Ivory. (Only thing the OH requested)

Ian Stuart's are expensive - around the £2K mark
