"Lounge suits" as a dress code

SophieM, 14 May, 2008 at 11:29 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 24

What does this mean for women? I've received a wedding invitation which has this on and am going to a function tonight that says the same. The wedding is obviously a frock and hat; tonight's do starts at 6.30 so is obviously not. What's your take on it?

(It's academic really, as I'm wearing a beige pencil skirt and a green floral silk top and green high heels and won't be changing.)

In these unelightened times of sartorial dullness it simply means 'wear a suit'.

Is it a pyjama party? ?

I think I'd take it to be the new "smart casual"

I had never thought that 'lounge suit' would apply to women.

What your wearing sounds lovely ?

The 'suit' thing BTW was for chaps.

Ladies have a much broader dress code, general guideline (open to interpretation) don't dress below 'business' standard.

Indeed. If it weren't for ONE I would have turned up in drag for sure.

What you are wearing sounds perfectly acceptable to me.

I agree that it depends very much on the occasion. For an evening function I would say a smart skirt, probably knee-length, and top - possibly a dress if it is the kind of dress you could wear in an office. Possibly trousers if they were very smart, and with smart heels. Wedding is clearly another kettle of fish as you say.

It is a sad reflection on our times that young ladies equate wearing a suit with being in drag. *sigh* ☹️

Lounge suit just means "suits but not morning suits" . Normal wedding attire for women (dress, heels, hat if you want)- I don't think there's a corresponding drop in formality.

"Lounge suits" for an evening wedding means "not black tie" I think.

For a wedding, yes - this was the dress code we said for anyone who asked for our wedding, which was sort of an evening one (service at 4pm), and for me that sort of describes what you would normally wear for a wedding.

We still had one person turn up in a morning suit and one in jeans, though

Yup. ? I also have one of those label makers to identify the files in my filing cabinet, and to label food in the freezer. It gives me great pleasure. I am working my way through tagging my library on Librarything but it'll take me some time. Deeply sad.
