Low Blood Pressure

SAM83, 1 July, 2008 at 17:47 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

Been for a gastroscopy this afternoon and after numerous BP checks, the highest reading I had was 77/44 which according to the doctor and nurse is extremely low. (I am a 24 year old woman if that makes a difference). They advised I make an appointment with my GP over next few days to discuss options.

I am worrying myself silly now, is it serious? My doctors surgery cant fit me in until a week Monday.

Thanks

That is low, however, some people do run on incerdibly low blood pressures. As long as your kidney function isn't reduced, ie you are still peeing, and that you do not feel ill with it, your health won't be massively compromised.

Were you nil by mouth for your gastroscopy? If so, the actual amount of fluid in your circulatory system will be reduced, giving you a lower blood pressure, especially as it's such a warm day.

Don't panic. Can you not get an on the day appointment? I think nearly everywhere does those now. There is a bit on BP here http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/articles/article.aspx?articleID=490 If you are really worried tell them its urgent or ask for a phone consult.

It is very low, but resist the urge to Google.

Have you been feeling ill recently, light-headed, weak or dizzy?

It's been discovered now anyway, so they can look into it and sort you out.

Thanks for replies and thanks Zo for the link, just had a read.

I was nil by mouth since 7am this morning for the procedure which happened at 2.30pm so I suppose that could be down to it, but they never said anything in the hospital about that.

Our Surgery is awful for appointments, I have put my name on the cancellation list so hopefully something will come up before hand. Unfortunately 2 of our doctors in the surgery left over the past few months and they havent got anyone else in yet.

I have been feeling light headed for a good while but because I am severely aneamic (hence the magic eye today) its always been put down to that. Since having my daughter neary 2 years ago I havent had my BP checked until today.

Don't panic, you'll be ok until you can see the gp, but they may want to do something about it if it is still low.

I have low blood pressure but it's not been as low as yours. Mine seems to be just the way I am. I occasionally get faint, especially if I move about too quickly but my GP basically said to make sure I eat salty foods if I get a spell - salt is good at raising blood pressure.

Mine got picked up on because they check your BP for the pill.

TBH if you feel fine you could just naturally have low BP - I wouldn't worry too much.

Mine is similar. I got stuck on a 24 hour (every 15 minutes) blood pressure monitor. Lots of blood tests taken, Was told to call back the next Monday for the results and to arrange a further appointment. Finally got the results nearly a month a later and was told it was all fine and not to bother coming in again. I suppose its better than high blood pressure - but I also have a tendancy to randomly faint without warning - which is lots of fun

Thanks for the extra replies - appreciate it!

Perhaps all this worry will bring my blood pressure up ?

I am just going to wait and see what Doctor says. Typical go into hospital for one thing and come out with something else wrong!!

    Thanks again everyone

I have stupidly low blood pressure. I found out last year that if I have a general anaesthetic it really goes to my boots! Not nice, but after a couple of days it was back to it's usual reading again. Docs are particularly interested unless you are fainting a lot and feeling dizzy regularly. Hope that helps.

I have quite low blood pressure and it has been as low as yours on a few occasions (mainly when I was in hospital after jaw surgery, lying down and not eating) but I do get faint every so often

More iron can boost it but Id check with your GP first
