M6 Toll near Cannock

Ellena, 15 February, 2009 at 12:30 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 20

We're going to Shropshire on tues. Just been on AA to plan the route and said to avoid toll roads. The step by step instructions don't mention the M6, but on the highlighted route on the map, it definitely goes on it. Is there a section where you don't have to pay?

I don't think it would be - where are you joining it? can't you take the m6 rather than the toll?

Most of the M6 is toll free - it's only a section around the cannock area that is. If yuo're travelilng from the south there are clear signs to just stay on the "normaal m6" rather than the toll.

I love the toll section of the M6. There is so much less traffic on the road and the whole journey is just that little bit easier. If there was an option to take the free M6 or the toll, I would personally go for the toll.

    WSS.

We go up and down between Milton Keynes and Liverpool quite regularly and always use the toll.

The purple highlighted bit is the toll free route AA has suggested. We'll be coming from the east, Lichfield way. They've got us joining near Bridgetown at the junction with the A460, A34 and A5. On it for about a mile, then off onto the A460, across the normal M6 and onto the M54.
We'll be travelling mid morning on tues, so not that bothered about raffic. It's nearly a fiver too, so I'd really prefer to avoid it.

Hmmm looking at it on google maps there doesn't seem to be any way of getting onto the m6 toll in the direction you are going in at bridgetown.

It doesn't look like it's toll free on the picture.
I agree with the others though, the toll road is great, well worth the money.

WSS, I don't think (looking on googlemaps) that you can get onto the toll road at that point.

If you get that far without going on the toll, by looking at the map it looks like you might as well just stay on the A road as it brings you onto the M6 anyway. Although I think it is a bit further down.

ACtually, on looking at your picture, I don't think your line is actually on the toll road at all, but on the road that runs just north of it. If you look at where the line crosses the toll road, near the west end of the toll, there isn't actually a juction there, its where the A road crosses it.

I think it just looks like its on the toll.

I could be wrong though! I'm tired! ?

If I was you I would just stay on the A5 across to Telford and avoid the Toll, M6 and most of the M54

I have just looked at the map on the AA website and if you zoom right in as far as it goes you are actually on the A road that runs parallel with the toll road, cross over it and avoid the toll road completely.

I travel from Lichfield to Telford every week and whilst it is easier to use the toll, it is also rather expensive. I go along the A5 through Brownhills, then at Cannock take the first exit which runs parallel to the toll road. You then head for Wolverhapmton through Featherstone and pick up the M54 at J2. I avoid the A5 to Telford as it's quite slow and it brings you in the other side of town, so it depends if you are even visiting Telford and if so where you are going.

From Lichfield it takes about 35 - 40 mins to Wellington.

Thanks for that Beans, good to know. We are staying somewhere called High Ercall, north of the A5 between Shrewbury and Telford, so no need to actually go into Telford. I remember the place from my A level geog field trip-not a holiday visiting kind of place!

Ha, that's the village next to where I'm from. You're best going to J6 M54.

Enjoy, and to clarify when I said first exit at Cannock that's on the MASSIVE roundabout, not the first roundabout you come to!

I'm just down from Brownhills. Drop in if you want a cuppa. ?

Cannock is a maze of roundabouts, but it's pretty clearly signed.
