Make up artist booking?

Shay, 9 May, 2023 at 20:51 Posted on Planning 2 13
I was wondering if someone could help? I’ve only ever had my make up done professionally once. How do you book? Do you ask if your date is available? Then book a trial? Or do you provisionally book and see if you like them? Im not too sure what to do or ask? Except I have 6 of us do we need an extra artist. I’ve got myself a little nervous about calling tomorrow. I know that sounds silly. Thank you.

I checked the date was available and then booked my trial. You can ask them if they think they'll need another person for 6 people - it could also tell you a lot about them. If they answer you clearly and are helpful, they're probably going to be more help than someone who is dismissive and ignores your question. I'm a great believer in seeing how people respond to smaller questions to determine how they'd deal with bigger issues.

And it doesn't sound silly at all - I have to be essentially forced into making calls. Text all the way for me!

Just take a breath, maybe write down what you want to ask (if you're like me, any questions go straight out of your head once I start talking!) and you'll be fine. They'll be used to nervous people too, so they should be able to help you relax.

Hi Lizzie! Thank you so much for your reply. I totally agree with what you’re saying. It’s a reflection of how they will be. I will be calling soon and I’ll write some questions now. Thank you for your reply. It’s so funny cause I can talk for Britain but put a phone to me and I get nervous. Haha.

I asked if my date was available and then booked them. Trials are usually quite close to the wedding, so if you wait until your trial to pay the deposit you may not get the Artist you wanted. My wedding is on 1st June and my trial was on 28th April. So very close.
Do alot of research into the make up artist and check all their reviews and social media pages. You need to check you like their style before you enquire. It's more important you pick someone whose style you like. When you have the actual trial, you cam adjust the look if you try something you don't like. It's not that common to have a trial before paying the deposit. Also make up doesn't take as long as hair. My make up artist is doing 6 of us and she isn't bringing a second person. As a guide the Bride takes 1 hour and bridesmaid usually take 45 mins each.

Hi Kirsty! Thank you! Yes. I’ve looked all over the lakes and a little up Scotland and I’ve narrowed it down to 5 and their reviews. I rang earlier the one I really really want and she was in the middle of an appointment but the lady I spoke to was so so lovely and answered my questions if will they travel etc? So that’s a good start and I hope I hear from her today/tomorrow.

That's good. Definitely go with someone whose communication is good and who doesn't wait days to return emails and calls. I've had to change 2 suppliers because they ended up being awful and I could never get hold of them. The level of communication in the beginning is a big indicator of whether they are a good supplier Smiley smile

I called a few local ladies and did both together, checked date was available and booked a trial. As it's turned out, I haven't had any trials yet and just a make up lesson (as I NEVER wear make up!) from someone who was busy. I have a hair lady who is doing a make up trial at the same time as my hair trial and one of my bridesmaids knows a great makeup artist, apparently, so looking to go meet her soon! I don't think there's any need to lock someone down to your date til you've had a trial but Ive seen many want the booking reserved before they will do a trial - up to you really xx definitely would say make sure you are on the same page as your make up artist. I sent one lady about 9 photos, and some I was like, this is wayyy too heavy but I like the lipstick colour, things like that. In all 9 I said I hate mascara and its too heavy and I'd rather not wear any and she came back and suggested false eyelashes which I thought was ridiculous, it's important that whoever you work with and are paying premium rates for, you feel are genuinely and sincerely listening to you, and responding accordingly!

Hello! So sorry I never seen this reply. She called me back to say she was having a very busy weekend but wanted to acknowledge my call. She rang me back on the Tuesday and confirmed my wedding day. She was so lovely and said she was excited to be part of it. I thought that was very nice of her to say. I’ve paid a £100 deposit for myself and all my bridesmaids and she has said to book my trial soon to talk about what I like etc. her make up is just what I love 100%, it is how I wear it normally but hers is Ofcourse so much better as I can’t do my eyes very good but everything else I’m good at. (I think, haha) I’m going to book for July and see how it wears on a summers day and an excuse to get dressed up for the day. Yes that is a strange one considering you mentioned the mascara. I told my best friends make up artist to just brush my eyebrows up to give me some lift and she said yes because your eyebrows make your face look pushed down and continued to fill them in underneath making them look even lower. It always puzzled me after both of us spoke about what suited my face more. x

I checked if the date was available and paid a deposit. I waited to get a trial ( 6 months before wedding)

The trial was awful ! I cancelled the booking the next day. Even though she has amazing reviews it was the worst face of makeup ive ever had.

I would definately have your makeup done with them before you book

No worries at all, not been on here as married now 2 months ago! hope you are still getting on OK and liking the trial if you've had one. I have concluded that I will continue to never wear make up! My make up on the day consisted of vvvv simple foundation, tiny bit of concealer, bit of eyeshadow, no mascara which was excellent, obviously no false eyelashes although I did get my eyebrows threaded from a lovely lady in London where my lovely hair lady is, £20 well worth it! and a tiny bit of lipstick which wore off and I couldn't be bothered to put any more on as it'd just wear off again, haha! was super happy and comfy all day, really hope you have a similar day and get the look you really want xx

Hey Victoria, LOL, I had a trial like that, the lady was a friend of one of my bridesmaids, to be fair I think the issue was rather, she interpreted what I was saying in a completely different way to the lady I ended up using, and what was weird was, she was putting on the make up without me being sat in front of a mirror, so when I did actually see it I had a fright, hahaha I HATED it as well, she is a great make up artist just totally didn't get what I was saying and it was far too much, she was an amazing lovely person but yes good for you for cancelling you don't want to be at all worried about that side or any side of things!! Hope you found someone else :-) xx

That all sounds so lovely and I’m glad you felt that way. I love make up, I only wear it a few times a month but it’s a huge part of me but I now wear absolutely none to work. I haven’t had a trial yet but I am doing it for my Christmas party at work and then a few times more before hand .yes, I don’t like the feeling of threading but I do love how they look. That’s is very kind, thank you very much and I hope I feel the way you did on your big day. Xx
