Make up artists catering for black/asian brides??

jojo2, 2 February, 2011 at 12:40 Posted on Planning 0 26

I am trying to find a make up artist but am struggling to find anyone who is used to doing afro-caribbean skin tones. When I had my make up done for my sisters wedding I had to bring my own foundation, blusher etc.. as their colours were just wrong, or they changed colour once they applied it. It's bad enough having to travel to bigger branches of stores to get the right colours.

Is there a gap in the market here?

From my very limited experience, I would say there might be yes!

    Haha - the little issues....

My best friend is very frustrated and a little bit upset at always being the one who can't have her hair and make up done by the same person as everyone else.

It's not a little gap in the market, it's a MAJOR one!

I'm having to get a friend to do mine as i can't find any make-up artists that specialise in black skin.

I would reccommend touting at your local Mac/Bobbi Brown/Fashion Fair counter. This is where my friend works and she gets "extra work" from ladies comingin to buy their wedding make-up and asking her to do it on the day!

I say be brave and ask...x

There are loads of make up artists catering for Asian brides, at least in my part of the woods... just google "asian bride make up".

I'm only half-Indian and have relatively pale skin so am just going with a "standard" make-up artist though.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't read your post properly and I see you're looking for someone specialising in Afro-Caribbean skin tones, but maybe try one of the Asian ladies?

I have to travel at least 25 miles to the nearest city who sell these brands so it is out of the question to have it done there on the wedding day. May have to book a makeover at Mac or Bobbi Brown and buy the products and attempt it myself.

    Hi Jojo,

Sorry, I meant to go into town, get one of the lovely counter ladies to do your make up, if you like what you see then just casually ask "do you do private make up?", then if she seems interested, take a number and speak to her after about coming to you to recreate the look on your special day! Some of the younger girls are always looking to make an extra buck here or there and many a famous make-up artist started on a counter! As my Gran used to say "if you don't ask, you don't get!"

    GO FOR IT!!!

    Hi JoJo,

Don't know if this is any use to you, but found out there is an Afro Caribbean wedding show in London in March

    http://www.mahoganybrides.com/

It does mention make up artists in the blurb, so maybe worth a visit?

Aah it is a pity, I know some makeup artists but they are London based. I have done a shout out on Twitter - someone must know someone - would like to know myself!

Think I posted this somewhere before but you could try Bolanle at http://www.makeupproonline.com ****************@*****.***

    http://www.facebook.com/?sk=2361831622#!/group.php?gid=144691848891695&v=infoLondon, United Kingdom

I know she's based in London but might be able to travel or have contacts. I can't say I have used her - apart from in our Uni days when she was getting her portfolio together but you'll see from her website that she's professional and has done a lot of work for fashion shows, magazines and also does make up workshops.

    Hope this helps

    From Twitter....

Joyce says she would have to charge mileage. She is about 1.5 hours travel time away. http://www.bridesandbeauty.co.uk

I have my friend checking her contacts too.

I am looking for a cake maker preferably in London, who makes the west indian mini cakes and whose icing

is on par of LVCC or Maisie Fantasie or Peggy. So far I have people who make lovely cakes but their icing

    leaves a lot to desire.

    Hi,

a professional freelance makeup artist should be able to cater for all skin types and should have products in the kit to do so, including foundations to cover all shades of white, asian and black skin. When you train as a MUA, you are taught to work on all skin types and colours. It might be worth ringing a few in your area and just asking. I myself have done a few black brides but I don't have their pictures in my gallery. I know a few friends that also do black skin but don't have pictures so it's always worth asking.

Hi Rochelle, I think it is good to know that some can do all skin types. I guess when browsing web sites if I don't see a representation of my skintype I just assume that they don't have the products and experience to suit so I don't persue them any further. I have seen some darker skinned brides with terribly matched foundation that it has made me realise how important it is to get it right. I will take your advice and just ask around.

JoJo, I think you're right. I guess if you don't see what you're looking for when you look at someone's website you assume they don't have it.

I'm going to put a couple of pics in my gallery. I think the reason I didn't do it was because I wasn't 100% happy with the photos at the time.

I echo what Rochelle said. I have bases in my kit from very very pale up to Afro carribean shades. I have worked on over 800 brides over the last 11 years and I would say only 1% of them had black skin. That means I only have a couple of brides with very dark skin on the portfolio page of my website but that doesn't mean I don't know how to work on black skins. Juliet
