Making a white sauce without butter

HeidiHole, 17 March, 2009 at 16:29 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 16

I've only got enough butter for my mash. Am I screwed? Can I use margarine?

I want to make a white sauce, Godammit <stamps foot>

Can you put milk or olive oil in your mash instead?

noooooooo - mash needs butter to be edible,

Try googling fat free white sauce - there are various options I think.

Margarine is perfectly fine, since we've started our "trying to eat healthier" regime, I've only ever made white sauce with Flora Light and *shock horror* skimmed milk and so far no complaints!

I don't use butter anyway...just make it with cornflour mixed into paste with a bit of the milk, then added slowly to just simmering milk and stirred well

Fatless White Sauce - courtesy of Delia

10fl oz/275ml milk - this can be infused but must be cold
    ¾oz/20g sauce/plain flour
salt and freshly milled black pepper

Place the milk in a small saucepan, then simply add the sauce flour and, over a medium heat, bring everything gradually up to simmering point, whisking vigorously and continuously with a balloon whisk until the sauce has thickened to a smooth, rich creaminess. Then add seasoning and allow it to cook very gently for 5 minutes on the lowest possible heat.

I always make white sauce this way TBH.

That sounds gooood! I'm at football so can either grab a rubbish sandwich from Sainsbury's, a curry from Wasabi (but I can't eat that on the tube, can I?) or a minging burger/hotdog from the ground.

Get a throwaway fork and eat the curry on the tube, if anyone gives you a funny look kick them.

Next time you come down I'll make this for you.

I can't allow myself to eat it on tube. Would likely throw it over fellow passenger if they did the same. I'll go to sainsburys and get a rubbish sandwich and some sweets to share with my old man. ?

    I'm free whenever you are .... ?
