Making own wedding cake

Aimee, 17 October, 2022 at 14:40 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 14
Is anyone thinking of making their own cake?? I'm not getting married til July 2024 so have ages to practice. I'm not a bad Baker but obviously a wedding cake needs to be perfect so I'm going to practice so much lol.
The prices of cakes now are just so much I'm even tempted to just bake 1 cake and the rest cupcakes. 😳
Anyone else having these ideas

Seriously though you don’t have to spend a fortune. Patisserie Valerie do wedding cakes circa £80 or M&S also do them including a special edition Colin the caterpillar

My mum's making ours - it's not going to be a cake though but a brownie pyramid that she'll decorate.

An FYI - it's a big job that can't be done that far in advance, as a result, my parents have booked a self-catering appartment on the venue site so that she has somewhere to finish prepping and it's not so difficult to transport. So just worth thinking about logistics a bit depending on where you're getting married!

Cakes are such a huge task! Grab a pretty, plain one and decorate it with flowers or fruit if you want to DIY but honestly, you might be better off buying one and sticking it on to of fake tiers - so many weddings do that!

I’m making ours. We’re going to have a bride and a groom cake though which will be smaller probably 6 inch cakes. No tiered cakes, too much of a faff. I bake cakes as a hobby and I couldn’t justify the prices that are charged. I know it’s art but I also know how much it costs me to make a cake and it ain’t that.

I am. We only have 20 to cater for. And the cost doesn’t warrant the money so decided to do this myself. That said I have found a lady close to us that does cake toppers. We have commissioned her to do this while I make a cake, marzipan and ice it.

I am thinking of making my own but I added it all up to work out how much it would cost me. So I've decided to go to M&S or waitrose and I've purchased decorations and toppers etc. It came to around £70 in total which is way cheaper than buying all the ingredients etc especially for what we're having. Made to order is less stressful and you can decorate it the day before.

I’ve very lucky my mother in law to be has offered to make the cake. We are going for three tiers, two of which will be fruit and one will be madeira. I think we will probably have some cupcakes as well.

Absolutely make your own! The prices of cake is extortionate. For my wedding we got a wedding tiered cake which was rustic looking from Lola’s cupcakes as they do cakes for weddings. It cost roughly £135.

But, I’ve been to incredible weddings where they have tiered cupcakes with different flavours and designs - edible flowers can make most things look beautiful. The only thing you need to have is someone handy to put the cakes out and make sure they are taken care of. The last thing you want to do on your wedding day is worry about the cake! 🧁
