Marriage preparation course

cw2b, 6 February, 2014 at 18:27 Posted on Planning 0 9

Sorry another question! I am doing a lot of wedding related tasks this week!

We are getting married in our local church and have been invited to a one off marriage preparation session. Just wondering if anybody else who is getting married in church has been/been invited to one of these courses and what to expect? The letter doesn't go into detail, just that we spend some time going through the service.

We've got one next Saturday - they said we get to view the church, listen to the organist play all the music options, etc. I'm guessing there's also some religious/counselling about what constitutes a good marriage included. Our session is four hours long!!!!!!!!

We did this at the weekend, I was hoping that they would talk about the ceremony with more derails, but it was just a couple who ended up kind of lecturing on how to have a perfect marriage! We had a booklet we had to work through with questionnaires, the first bit was interesting but then the 2nd part was dragging - we were there 7 1/2 hours in total! Some other couples I have spoken to who got married in a church didn't have to do though.

    Good luck to you!

Might be a long day then! I don't mind listening and filling out questionnaires but I'm not very good at being open and honest with my feelings, even birthday cards etc to OH are very much to the point lol! ?

When we booked our date with the priest, we were told we did not need to do the classes as we have children. Is this right?

Hey we're having a catholic wedding and will be going on our marriage prep course soon. It's apparently with other couples and you discuss what makes a marriage and the skills you need etc...at the end we get a certificate to show our priest. I think it differs for Church of England and other denominations but generally it's based on thinking about what a marriage is and how you can make it work together.

We had our preperation course in November and it wasn't as bad as i thought. We were there from 10am until 2.30pm and that included lunch at the local pub. There were about 8 couples and each couple had a booklet to work through, the first task we had was like a Mr & Mrs type quiz about each other, the second was rating our priorities in a marriage and then rating what we thought our partners priorities were, this was actually quite interestng. The last task we did after lunch was about conflict and how we deal with arguments.

We didn't have to share our answers if we didn't want to. It was all quite relaxed really.

My OH and I are doing the marriage prep course. The one started by Nicky and Sila Lee at HTB. It's now run internationally. We are really enjoying it. There are five sessions which each start with a meal, then a talk with exercises to do. There are zillions of couples there but you never have to discuss anything with them. It's just me and my OH chatting. We love it. It's like a date night and gives us time to really talk about things that matter. There's a book that goes with the course as well.

We are meeting with our vicar separately to discuss the ceremony, music choices etc.

We have our church confirmation through and we will have marriage preparation day in the February before we marry, I don't know what includes but I know it's a group session with other couples marrying in that benefice in the same year and I had just imagined it would cover the importance of marriage etc, we'll see, I have two years to wait before finding out. xx

We had ours last month and I have to say I really enjoyed it.

It was from 10 - 3.30 with lunch. We went through all music choices, order of the day, how to do order of service and all practical things like that with a Q&A session. We also did couple tasks based around communication, conflict and commitment which was really interesting and made you really think about your relationship and reasons why you love your OH which I thought was nice.

It was also good to meet other couples and discuss ideas and things with them.
