Married at an English castle

LuxuriousBlueDiamonds716, 7 December, 2016 at 02:09 Posted on Planning 0 10

Looking to have a very intimate wedding ceremony at an English castle during our visit to the UK next September/October.

It would just be us (obviously) the celebrant and perhaps a few invited guests/witnesses.

It wouldn't necessarily even need to be in a chapel, just something within the grounds.

Trying to find something suitable and cost effective in the London area.

Would love any suggestions?

Trev.

I'm not sure how many venues you'll find for quite a small number of people, but have a look through this link:

I did have a look at the English Heritage website too but they seem to be for large numbers of guests.

Also, not a castle but a pretty impressive location:

    I'll keep racking my brains!

Not London, but Temple Newsam in Leeds has a licence. You'd be able to marry on a weekday there, larger weddings will take the weekends I think. http://www.leeds.gov.uk/museumsandgalleries/Pages/templenewsamhouse/Venue_Hire.aspx

It's not far from Leeds Bradford Airport, though it's 200 miles from London but a lot of people who visit the UK come to Yorkshire anyway because of the countryside.

I only know of castles up this way which is in the Midlands. I know Kenilworth Castle do weddings as my sister got married there, from what I remember they do intimate ceremonies. There is also Warwick Castle but it is grand, so unsure if they would do intimate ceremonies as well.

Wishing you all the best with your plans and hoping you find exactly what you are looking for ?

It may be the intimate nature of your ceremony that is the sticking point as well as the closeness to London although Im not sure on the London area castle situation. If you can look further afield you may give yourself a better chance.

I shot a castle wedding about 8 years ago at Rockingham Castle and the wedding was in a Church in the grounds, with reception drinks in the castle but the meal was in a marquee. Here are a few snaps from that one to give you an idea.

Also about 8 years ago I shot wedding at Burghley House ( dont let the word House put you off ? ) and this one you can have a ceremony in the Grand Hall which is very castle like as is the whole building.

And you can also have your meal in there too

If moving out of London is an option there are quite a few castles in Kent that could be worth looking at. Hever Castle and Leeds Castle will probably both be too big and expensive but there are others around. If you don't mind moving away from a castle but still want someone with an 'older' feeling then somewhere like Tower House in Canter bury might work.

I walk past it every day and it's a lovely building in a park with a river running through it(open to the public). They had a wedding fair there the other week and went and had a sneaky look. Ideal for a smaller wedding, very pretty inside and the staff seemed very nice.

Take a look at Westenhanger castle. In Kent. The train travels from St Pancras to Westenhanger station....takes about an hour.

It has a stunning interior and gardens and is perfect for an intimate wedding

It's worth looking at Farnham Castle in Surrey. Castle, but has a feeling of intimacy without feeling cavenous and has accomodation too.

You can get married at Tattershall Castle - it is in the Midlands but probably about 90 mins drive out of London.

    https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/tattershall-castle/features/have-your-wedding-at-tattershall-castle

Bodiam Castle is in East Sussex so a bit further south.

There are several National Trust properties (not all castles) you can get married at - the link below is for ones in the London & South East area

Farnham Castle in Surrey is certainly a good suggestion. Lovely venue, really easy to get to from the major London airports.
