Martin Lewis and MSE - it's bloomin great

WelshTotty, 13 February, 2009 at 15:33 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

Just trying to sort out our expenditure / income to see where we are financially and filled in the budget spreadsheet on MSE. How flippin fab is it?! Great way to break everything down to see just where your finances lie.

Mr WT and I have been trying to sort stuff out as the probabilty of him handing his notice in once his stress sick leave ends is currently running at 100%. So we have been trying to see if we can cut back on some stuff and get rid of some things that we pay for but are not essential. We started least week by both cancelling laptop insurance for maintenance costing us £20 a month between us, and Mr WT changing from a £35 a month contract to a £15 contract on his mobile. Yesterday we changed our mortgage to an interest only bringing our payments down by £335 a month (however we are also overpaying by £335 a month too which will come off the capital just like the repayment mortgage, but it gives us more flexibilty should we need it if (when) Mr WT's salary is slashed)

Anyway I have spotted a few things that we can get rid of that are non essential that would save us some more. So now, even if he is out of work for a bit I can cover all the expenses on my wage. Martin Lewis and MSE is flippin marv. It's been a good exercise too see what comes in , goes out and what can be cut back.

YAY for MSE!

It is a good website, very clear and concise and full of good suggestions. Have you signed up for the email - it's really useful.

It is a great site. I find the forums can be so supportive (bit like Hitched really)

The Old Style board is a vary useful one for ideas on how to minimise grocery budgets without compromising on the quality of food. There is a huge resource of recipes, I usually go there as first port of call if I'm after something specific.

Second the email. Its full of good stuff. just watch you don't get sucked into 'bargains' that you don't need!

I think running through our income and expenditure every few months is quite useful, if only so you don't get any nasty surprises and know to budget for one offs like car insurace / tax etc.

I love that site and am always reading the OS section on the forums

I miss being able to act on the deals though

The only thing I'm not 100% about is the cheap air flights finder
