All you 'need' to be married is whatever the legal requirements are where you are living. Rules differ slightly for religious and civil ceremonies, but the basics are the same - you need to give formal notice of your intention to marry and have someone to perform the ceremony and record the marriage and two witnesses.

If you want a different type of wedding (e.g. large/small, secular/religious, local/destination) then each need to work out what is most important to you and try to reach a compromise. This won't be the last difference of opinion you'll have, so it's a great opportunity to learn how to deal well with conflict before it crops up over more serious issues!
