Men's suit hire

hanhan, 21 September, 2008 at 19:39 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hey hey hey!

Where are you all planning on hiring your suits from? Debenhams seems to be the best bet for us but I'm worried as I have heard some bad comments about their service so I thought I would pop on here for some advice!

Thanks in advance x

We are using Slaters for our suits, but I haven't heard anything bad about Debenhams. Slaters have what we were looking for at a price that suited our budget.

We hiring our suits from a bridal shop near us so cant help u out there. However when my friend got married a couple of years ago she went to Debenhams for all outfits hire/buy and she said they were great & has even reccommended I get mine from there, only reason I am not is the bridal shop I mentioned is next door & same price as everywhere else (i.e Moss Bros, Debenhams, Greenwoods) so its just easier for fittings & getting suits back day after.....our nearest Debenhams is 15 miles away.

    Hope that helps

    Hi,

I am one of the owners of a small family business in East London, we are tailors as well as a successful hire business. Just thought I would chip in with some advice, if that is OK.

There are lots of different 'Suit Hire' places out there and lots of different methods that these companies use.

    1. Nationwide hire: Moss Bros, Youngs, Burtons and Debenhams. These big companies have the most competitive prices and have lots of branches to be measured. They also do not carry stock, you do not get to see the exact garments until you collect them and can have a poor repuatation.

    2. Trade Hire & Franchises: Etiquette and Pronuptia etc. These are normally located in Bridal Shops, Florists etc. These people essentially work as reps, and receive a percentage of each hire. This means no stock (other than samples) no proffessional measuring and relying on third parties. They also can have a poor reputation.

    3. Small and medium business. These are normally the most expensive. But carry stock, so you can try on exactly what you will receive. They will also have a more exclusive range and give proffessional advice. Sometimes you may to travel to get the guys fitted.

I would always advise doing some research before using any company, and try to only part with your money once you have tried the EXACT garments you will receive on the day. This will ensure a correct fit and the quality of the garments (considering that these garments have been worn before this is essential).

Thats my two-peenies-worth for the day Smiley smile

    Thanks

    Marc

I know you are advertising your business here but think its a bit unfair to say that Nationwide hire and franchises can have a bad reputation but neglect to say that small and medium businesses can also have bad reputations because of course they can. Possibly just me being picky but I just dont think thats fair.

You are correct any business can have a bad reputation (large or small), However if you were to Google: Suit hire recommendations or suit hire reviews (or something like that) You will see that the large nationwide companies have a far worse reputation. This is because they have alot more customers and therefore will have lots more opptunities to make mistakes.

I never said that anyone business was better than the other (including my own). I simply said that I would do my research first.

I apologise if this was misunderstood.

    Thanks Again,

    Marc

No need to apologise Marc Smiley smile of course its always best to do research no matter what you are considering renting or purchasing. Got to admitt in our area Ive not heard anything bad about the bigger chains, not heard anything too bad about the smaller ones either though to be fair, maybe we are just lucky ?.

We used Debenhams. Their online selection looks awful - but honestly, it hasn't changed since I was looking about 2 years ago! They had a brochure in store and the selection looked really good.

We easily found what we wanted and it made life easier as my dad and brother were in Norwich (H got his suit from there too although we were Londoners at the time!), best man in Scotland, other usher in london and FIL in Cambridge area - they all went to local branches and ordered/collected suits from there.

Service at least in Norwich was fab - one week before the wedding we went to try on suits for dad, bro and H. There was a mistake and wrong waistcoats and ruches had been ordered for 2 of them. I was so stressed but the girl in store was so calm and in control that it stopped me panicking. She delivered just what she'd promised, too - everything in time and correct for the day.

As I said earlier Hannah- Windsor Formal Hire are superb. They are tailors too which is very useful and they matched my colours specially with the cravats. They will make them for free if you give them a certain fabric too. It's a really good service. My bro used them as have a few of his friends.

They did all the suits for Peter Phillips wedding this year (all 90 of them apparently!)
